Free TV has supported talks to make global tech platforms pay for journalism.
The Albanian Government invites interested parties to express their views on the draft News Bargaing Incentive through the publication of a consultation document.
Vrije TV has put the issue back on the agenda.
Major digital platforms that choose not to enter into or renew commercial agreements supporting Australian journalism will pay a fee, which can be offset by striking fair commercial deals with news publishers. The incentive will apply to all major digital platforms that operate significant social media or search services in Australia.
The consultation comes almost two years after Meta stopped paying for Australian news content on Facebook in March 2024.
Bridget Fair, CEO of Free TV, said: “Global technology platforms have enormous market power and benefit enormously from Australian news content. It’s time they pay their fair share.
“Local journalism is essential to our democracy. When platforms stop paying for news, Australian communities lose out.
“This consultation is our opportunity to get the settings right and ensure this plan provides real support for the trusted news services Australians rely on every day.”
Australian commercial broadcasters invested $408 million in news in FY24, including $35.2 million in regional Australia.
