Netflix is acquiring Warner Bros., including its film and television studios HBO Max and HBO, in a mega deal worth $82.7 billion (A$124.5 billion).
The acquisition brings together two giant entertainment companies, combining franchises, shows and films The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, The Wizard of Oz and the DC Universe with Netflix Wednesday, Money Heist, Bridgerton, Adolescence And Extraction.
“Our mission has always been to entertain the world,” said Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix. “By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library of shows and movies, from timeless classics such as Casablanca And Citizen Kane to modern favorites such as Harry Potter and Friends—with our culture-defining titles such as Stranger Things, KPop Demon Hunters And Squid game, we can do that even better. Together we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling.”

Netflix has indicated that it wants to keep HBO Max and expects Warner Bros.’ current activities. maintain and build on its strengths, including theatrical releases for films.
“By adding the extensive movie and TV libraries and HBO and HBO Max programming, Netflix members will have even more high-quality titles to choose from. This will also allow Netflix to optimize its plans for consumers, improve viewing options and expand access to content,” Netflix said.
The deal is expected to close in the next 12 to 18 months, the companies said, following the previously announced split of WBD’s TV network division, Discovery Global, into a new publicly traded company, now expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.
