The army of Nepal will resume the lectures on Thursday with “Gen Z” demonstrators to decide a new interim leader for the Himalayan Nation, said a spokesperson for the army, after angry demonstrations that killed 30 and to resign the prime minister.
Soldiers patrolled through the quiet streets of Kathmandu, the capital, after the worst protests caused in years caused by a ban on social media that the authorities rolled back after 19 killing while the police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to control crowds.
“The first conversations are underway and would continue today,” said Raja Ram Basnet, the spokesperson, said ReutersReferring to the discussions about a new interim leader. “We try to normalize the situation slowly.”
The death toll of the protests had risen to 30 on Thursday, said the Ministry of Health of Nepal, with 1,033 injured.
Forbidden will remain in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas most of the day, the army said in a statement, while a spokesperson for the airport said that international flights were operating.
The demonstrations are popularly called the “Gen Z” protests, because most participants were young people who expressed frustration about the government’s observed failure to combat corruption and to increase economic opportunities.
The demonstrators have called former chief judge Sushila Karki as an interim prime minister, said Raman Kumar Karna, the secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, which they have consulted.
“When they asked me, I accepted it,” Karki told the Indian television news channel CNN-News18.
The protests, in which government buildings, from the Supreme Court to the houses of the ministers, including Oli’s private home, were also on fire, only disappeared after the prime minister had resigned.
Business branches on fire included various hotels in the tourist city of Pokhara and the Hilton in Kathmandu.
