NCRTC launches ‘Solar on Track’ project at Duhai depot, a first for high-speed rail and metro network

In a first for a high-speed rail or metro network in India, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has installed solar panels directly on the track under its new ‘Solar on Track’ initiative at the Namo Bharat Depot in Duhai.

The pilot installation was carried out on the Pit Wheel Track at the Duhai depot, where 28 solar panels of 550 Watt peak each have been installed over a length of 70 meters. The total capacity of the plant is 15.4 kWp, which is expected to generate about 17,500 kWh of energy annually and help reduce about 16 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, NCRTC said.

According to NCRTC, the project reflects its continued focus on sustainable and energy-efficient operations. The project concept makes use of otherwise unused track space while contributing to the organisation’s broader goal of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions across all its facilities.

NCRTC currently aims to meet about 70 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources. As part of its solar energy policy, it plans to generate a peak of 15 megawatts of internal solar energy on the roofs of stations, depots and other buildings. Of this, 5.5 MW has already been put into use. The new track-based system is another step toward that goal, the report said.

The initiative also supports the objectives of the National Solar Mission and strengthens NCRTC’s commitment to promoting clean energy and sustainable practices in the transportation sector, the company said.

Besides solar power plants, NCRTC has integrated several eco-friendly features into its network, including rainwater harvesting, sewage treatment plants and regenerative braking systems in Namo Bharat trains that convert kinetic energy into electrical energy during braking.

By implementing sustainable energy solutions in its infrastructure, NCRTC aims to set new benchmarks for sustainability in urban transportation systems and contribute to a greener, energy-efficient future for the National Capital Region.
