A sanction warrant for the design and development of a 6 megawatt (MW) Average Marine Diesel engine speed was signed between the Indian Marine and the Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (cool) under Make-I category of the purchasing procedure.
“The Diesel engine prototype with indigenous content of more than 50% will be developed at a cost of £ 270 crore with 70% financing from the Indian government. The order also includes the development of detailed design for 3-10 MW Diesel engine,” said a Ministry of Defense. The developed engines will be used for the most important propulsion and power generation on ships of the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard.
In this respect, the ministry said that most diesel engines from higher capacity have been imported to now from foreign original manufacturers of equipment (OEM) and this project will start the process with achieving self -reliance in the development of marine engine in the country. “It will further strengthen the indigenous capacities, save socies and reduce dependence on foreign OEMs. It will act as a catalyst for the development of the industrial ecosystem of defense in the country,” it said.
The design and development of the project will be native to the research and development teams of Koel, the company said in a statement.
