Nathan Williamson is making positive progress after a serious fall

Harness driver Nathan Williamson is making encouraging progress at Auckland Hospital after suffering serious injuries in a fall at Alexandra Park on Friday evening.

Williamson was piloting Captains Mistress in the final stages of the race when the seat on his sulky collapsed, causing him to fall from his seat and sending him heavily to the track at the winning post. He was rendered unconscious in the incident and also suffered injuries to his face.

Medical staff immediately responded to the scene before Williamson was transported by ambulance to Auckland Hospital, where he was placed in a coma as a precaution.

Nathan’s wife Katie and members of the wider Williamson family were by his side throughout the weekend. The Williamsons are one of New Zealand’s best-known running families, with Phil and Bev, and brothers Matthew and Brad, all heavily involved in the sport.

In an update shared this evening via Nathan Williamson RacingKatie expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received since the accident, while also asking for privacy during the early stages of his recovery.

“Nathan is in the right place, with a great team of professionals and family at his side,” said Katie.

“We are pleased with his progress so far.”

She also thanked those who helped immediately after the incident, including staff at Hato Hone St John, medical staff at Auckland Hospital and members of the Alexandra Park running community who rushed to help.
