“Nobody believes in us!” Is usually the cheapest heat in sport. I hate it. It promotes a base, provincial mentality among both fans and players. It changes the joy of competition and success in hostility on a observed (often imagined) light. I just go outside and say it: if you need “the haters” to motivate you, you are a smaller person! If I never heard “nobody believes in us”, I would be a happy man.
Fortunately, I don’t have to hear it that much nowadays, because the Patriots 2019-one years away from their sixth Super Bowl victory and ninth performance in the Brady-BrakeKick era- The line rolled out and was laughed at. There is a difference between “nobody believes in us” and “nobody loves us” and the patriots discovered the hard way. Since then they have not won a play -off game.
Although “nobody believes in us” is imaginative, and usually not true, and hacked in complete meaninglessness, I want to extend an exemption to the Cleveland Guardians in 2025. I will put my hands up; I didn’t believe in you.
Yes, the Guardians won the Al Central last year and even came to the ALCS, but the Tigers and Royals had also made promising runs to the late season. Al Central from last year is actually the only division in the history of the Major League that produces three teams that have won a play -off round in the same season. Certainly, the twins would no longer collapse. This found a pretty competitive division.
Especially after Cleveland has done nothing but dismantle his schedule from 2024. Alex Cobb And Matthew BoydThey combined to make half of the play -off of the Guardians last year, left as free agents. Josh Naylor was traded to Arizona, Andrés Giménez was traded to Toronto, and former starting centervelder Tyler Freeman was sent to Colorado.
Their big free agent -relocation was to cables Carlos Santana Back for a third passage with the team. He hit .225/.316/.333 and was cut at the end of August. That is considerably more than what Cleveland got from John meansWho still has to pitch in the Majors this year. He is currently on a rehabilitation assignment after undergoing Tommy John operation at the beginning of June 2024.
I know that the Guardians are also a fixture in October as Jack O’Lanterns. (Maybe we should call them the Cleveland Gourdians.) I know that these boys win 90 games and make the play-offs every year with a selection of anonymous, hardly any ensouled quad-a boys, but this year’s harvest was mainly anonymous, even according to Cleveland’s norms.
I chose the Tigers to win the division.
What happened afterwards? Well, the Tigers roared away to a double digits lead, while the Guardians were faltering around .500. Last year’s large Deadline Acquisition, Lane ThomasIn fact, wrote his season because of a number of injuries. Emmanuel -Classe And Luis Ortiz became entangled in a gambling scandal and have not been available for months.
Cleveland sent the former Cy Young winner at the Handelsdeadline Shane Bieber The well -traveled path (channel?) To Toronto. I wrote the trade and didn’t think anything about it; The Guardians were stunner at .500, with a chance of 12.2% to make the play-offs, and they had just lost a Clase. Of course they would sell. Already in 10 September the Playoff opportunities of the Guardians was less than 5%.
Usually, when a team is on their way to the play -offs, they show us at least a single lonely reason for optimism before the start of the football season.
You now know what has happened in the past two weeks. The Guardians, who were a competition under .500 on 4 September, have since been 17-3. Far from a play-off place to support, the Guardians are the second best team in the competition. (The 17-2 Mariners spoiled the narrative pleasure here.) That includes taking five of the six from the Tigers, which are in the middle of the largest diversion of the stretch run in the history of the Major League.
How they do this is fairly simple; During this streak, The Guardians have allowed half as many runs as any other team in baseball. In the month of September the Guardians are the first in the competition in Era with almost a run. (No. 2 is the Pirates, which went over that piece 8-13.) Cleveland is third in Strikeout speed, second in K-BB%and the second in the opponent’s stroke average.
But the Guardians are only 12th in WRC+at the time. Not that you have to score many runs if you only allow one and a half run per game, but that is less than I expected. If you move the date range a few taps to coincide perfectly with this 17-3 run, Cleveland only hits .244/.310/.411 as a team. That is a WRC+ of only 102. That is ridiculous! A team that wins on a better clip than, well, the Brady-Belichick Patriots only has an average attack!
In the article about the Reds I have linked earlier, I said Guardians are changing hitters to prime Jimmie Foxx In high leverage, and that is still true. But it made me think.
In particular, it made me think about the Billy on the street Little where he goes to people (on the street, hence the name) and asks them to call a woman.
This turned into a meme because, confronted with a loud man and a microphone, people stamp when they are put on the spot. (Playing at home, I admit that I needed a few seconds to come up with a name, and when I got out, the first woman I could think of was Sandra Day O’Connor.).
What I want to do is ask people to name three current Guardians position players.
Evidently, José Ramírez Is the road, the truth and life. He is the shiny angel of Cleveland. When I said in Slack that I would try to find the third best position player of the Guardians, Jay Jaffe-ei asked the penetrating humor or no. 1 and no. 2 would be Ramírez left -handed and Ramírez Batting right -handed.
Most casual baseball fans can see you Ramírez, as well as Steven Kwan. Kwan does not have a great season according to his standards, but with 21 stolen bases and plus defense in the left field, he is still a player of three or four wins.
But what happens if you continue? Thomas is on the il. Is so David FryAfter his scary brush with Shoveled Earlier this week. Santana is from the team. Nolan JonesAnother recidivist guardian is out with a tense sloping and this year was a player below the replacement level. JHONKENY NOEL is back, but he hits .154/.176/.273 (19 WRC+) and has only run four times in 67 games. If this is big Christmas, it is like a Christmas where nobody remembers to thaw the turkey and during the subsequent fight you realize that your parents should probably divorce.
Asking someone to call a third Guardians position player is a more difficult proposal than asking him to call a woman. These are not big names. Rosterresource has Cleveland Pelotoning on four of the nine places in the Line -Up. Of the 14 position players currently on the active schedule of Cleveland, only Ramírez, Kwan, and Austin Hedges Entered the season with at least two years of major League service time. And of the four Rookies on the schedule of the Guardians, the highest rated prospect is CJ KayfusThat was in 10th place in the Cleveland system and not on the global list at all. No one else came higher than the 25th.
Here is a nice little bit of trivia: the Guardians have three batters with a OPS+ of 85 or better in 150 or more record appearances this season: Ramírez, Kwan, and Kyle Manzardo. That would tie the record The least of such battle people in every play -off team in the history of Al/NL.
“There is certainly a reservation for 2020,” I hear you ask. No! Even in 2020, when 150 record performances were almost enough to be eligible for the Batting title, all 16 Playoff teams were able to scream at least three batters with an 85 Ops+ in 150 or more Pa. The record low for a playoff team in a full season is five. Last year’s White Sox, who lost 121 races, had six batters with an OPS+ of 85 in 150 record performances.
This is not a high bar to erase.
I spoiled the game here a bit by mentioning several other Guardians position players. You probably knew Hedges, Noel and Manzardo. Bo NoylorIs there already a minute, as has Brayan RocchioAnd you probably heard Daniel SchneemannEven if you have trouble remembering that he has three N’s in his last name.
Anyway, here are all Guardians Position players currently in the active schedule, have registered at least 100 record performances this season and have other names than Ramírez and Kwan.
Who is the third best Guardians Position Player?
| Name | Age | Pos. | G | Pa | HR | R | BB% | K% | AVG | OBP | SLG | WRC+ | WAR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daniel Schneemann | 28 | Util | 129 | 414 | 12 | 48 | 9.2% | 26.8% | .210 | .288 | .361 | 83 | 1.4 |
| Bo Noylor | 25 | C | 120 | 404 | 14 | 44 | 10.9% | 24.3% | .194 | .282 | .376 | 84 | 1.3 |
| Austin Hedges | 32 | C | 69 | 178 | 5 | 13 | 10.1% | 23.6% | .157 | .247 | .275 | 49 | 1.1 |
| Kyle Manzardo | 24 | 1b / dh | 139 | 522 | 26 | 46 | 9.2% | 25.3% | .232 | .312 | .449 | 111 | 1.1 |
| Gabriel Arias | 25 | 2B/SS | 126 | 460 | 11 | 44 | 5.7% | 34.1% | .218 | .272 | .358 | 76 | 1.0 |
| Brayan Rocchio | 24 | 2B/SS | 112 | 372 | 4 | 33 | 5.9% | 19.9% | .234 | .293 | .335 | 78 | 0.4 |
| CJ Kayfus | 23 | 1b/from | 41 | 132 | 4 | 16 | 8.3% | 27.3% | .229 | .298 | .432 | 102 | 0.2 |
| Engel Martínez | 23 | 2B/CF | 137 | 475 | 11 | 54 | 4.6% | 22.9% | .226 | .268 | .362 | 74 | -0.2 |
| JHONKENY NOEL | 23 | RF | 67 | 148 | 5 | 18 | 2.7% | 33.8% | .154 | .176 | .273 | 19 | -1.2 |
Based on per game, the best player here is hedges. I tried to be careful with my tone during this message. I don’t want my fascinated disbelief for spot or spot. But even recognizing the incredible defense of Hedges, it is ridiculous that a team could win a competitive division with his third best position player that touches .157/.247/.275.
I also saw an argument for Schneemann as the third best position player of the Guardians, given his versatility and two -way contributions. But if I had to call a third-best Guardians position player, I would go with Manzardo. Manzardo splits his time between the first base and DH, provides little defensive value. But he is the only average or briefer Slagman who have the Guardians, outside their two all-stars. Of the 35 first base men with at least 300 record performances this year, Manzardo is 21st at war and 16th in WRC+. Josh Naylor, the man he replaced, has set more war this season for each of the Diamondbacks and Mariners than Manzardo set up in total. But Manzardo is about an average player. And the average player is king in the land of boys who touch .200 without power.
Nobody believed in the guards and to be pretty bone, they have earned that lack of faith. And yet, here they are, the Leiden division with three more games to go. No matter how unbelief this seems, it happens.
