Cina, whose father Francesco has coached 2015 US Open women’s singles runner-up Roberta Vinci, broke Nagal in the opening game of the first set and maintained his lead. In the second set, the youngster from Palermo raced to a 5-1 lead. As a small group of fans egged Nagal on, the local favorite suddenly found another gear to close the gap. But the sixth seed from Italy held his nerve and served when the score was 5-4 to end the encounter.
“I am very happy with this victory,” Cina, who did not progress beyond the qualifying stages of the 2025 US Open and 2026 Australian Open, said later. “Nagal is a tough player. He also played at home, so it was difficult. The crowd got excited. It was tough, but I served well in the last match.”
