NAACP President Derrick Johnson stated: “We will not allow Xai to get away with this.”
The NAACP leads the fight against the Xai startup of Elon Musk, while the supercomputer facility continues to harm black residents in Memphis.
The organization has collaborated with environmental groups to appeal against a permit with which Musk’s company can run natural gas -burning turbines that feed the facility. According to CNBCthe groups the paperwork submitted for the profession July 15.
Musk established the factory for the first time last year and went relatively under the radar by considering the turbines as temporary. Nearby residents, however, quickly saw adverse effects in the area and their health. They noted stench and a fall in air quality, which means what the NAACP regards as a case of environmental acism.
The turbines also omit contaminating substances such as nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. According to the exhaust valve, high exposure to the nitrogen oxide can lead to a higher risk of death due to respiratory diseases.
Nevertheless, Local Board has enabled Musk to continue to use the turbines. The most recent permit, approved by Shelby County Health Department 2 July, says that the tech entrepreneur can use a maximum of 15 of them and agrees with the first statement of Musk that they are small enough to be ‘not -road engines’.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which represents the NAACP and the local environment group Young, Gifted & Green, argued that the health department wrongly categorized the turbines. They further claimed that this not only ignores the concerns of residents, but also violates the Clean Air Act.
In response, Xai called the profession ‘unfounded’ and ‘politically driven’. The startup told the news exit that they felt “discouraged (but not surprised)” by the move, but claimed that they meet all levels of the law.
However, the NAACP had earlier Spread consciousness About Xai’s constant negative health impact on the black population of Memphis.
“All too often large companies such as Xai treat our communities and families such as obstacles to go aside,” said NACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson in June. “We cannot afford to normalize this type of environmental disposal-where companies with billion dollars are set up polluting activities in black neighborhoods without permits and think they are getting away with it because people do not have the power to fight back. We will not allow Xai to get away with this.”
The groups have already threatened to take further legal steps with a lawsuit.
