Key facts
In one message on XMusk announced that “version 0.1” of Grokipedia was now live, claiming that “Version 1.0 will be 10x better, but even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia.”
At launch, Grokipedia had more than 885,000 articles compared to Wikipedia’s 7 million, but while the crowdsourced online encyclopedia uses human authors and editors, Musk’s alternative consists entirely of articles generated and “fact-checked” by xAI’s Grok.
Grokipedia also does not allow its users to make changes, but Musk does said Users will be able to “ask Grok to add/edit/remove items and the company will take action or tell you if it doesn’t and why.”
In one separate X-postMusk added that the goal of Grok and Grokipedia is “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth… We will never be perfect, but we will strive toward that goal nonetheless.”
Does Grokipedia contain articles from Wikipedia?
Several articles on Grokipedia include a disclaimer at the bottom, which reads: “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license.” Wikipedia’s website already has one entry on Grokipedia, noting that “Many articles are derived from Wikipedia articles, with some articles observed to have been copied almost verbatim.” At the time of publication there were some articles on Grokipedia, such as the one on the PlayStation 5car manufacturer Lamborghiniand chip maker AMDappeared to be nearly identical copies of the corresponding Wikipedia entries. Musk said he is aware that Grokipedia uses Wikipedia articles and added: “We should have this resolved by the end of the year.”
What did the Wikimedia Foundation say?
In a statement shared with several socketssaid the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that runs Wikipedia: “Wikipedia’s knowledge is – and always will be – human… This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.” The statement added: “Many experiments to create alternate versions of Wikipedia have been done before; it does not interfere with our work or mission.”
