Murray wishes the partnership with Djoker led to more wins

LONDON – Andy Murray says he was “disappointed” with Novak Djokovic’s results during his time as coach of his former rival.

Murray joined Djokovic’s coaching team in November 2024, just three months after the 38-year-old Scot ended his own playing career at the Paris Olympics.

But it turned out to be a brief six-month partnership, as the pair were only together at the Australian Open and five other tournaments this year.

“I look back on it and I’m glad I did it,” Murray told The Tennis Podcast.

“It’s a great experience I had. It didn’t last long, but I did everything I could. I was disappointed. I probably didn’t get the results I wanted for him.”

“It was a good opportunity because I felt like I wanted to coach at some point. If I hadn’t taken that opportunity, I might look back on it and think it would have been really interesting. I could have learned a lot, or possibly regret it.”

Djokovic defeated Carlos Alcaraz to reach the semifinals at the Australian Open, but tore his left hamstring. The 24-time Grand Slam champion then retired after one set against Alexander Zverev and was booed off the court.

On his return, the 38-year-old Serbian suffered opening losses in Qatar and Indian Wells. He then reached the final of the Miami Open, but lost to Czech teenager Jakub Mensik.

Murray initially planned to coach Djokovic to the French Open, but the partnership ended in May after first defeats on clay in Monte Carlo and Madrid.

“It went well at first and it was a shame what happened in Australia with the injury, but I saw him play ridiculous tennis that tournament,” Murray said.

“After the injury it was definitely a difficult few months for him, but I think also for the team and for all of us. I learned a lot about what coaching is. I gave my all, did my utmost to help and built some good relationships with his team along the way.”
