Westfield, Indianapolis: Sebastian Munoz said he forgot himself to make a few bad shots that led to an early double bogey in his opening round on Friday in Liv Golf Indianapolis.
He immediately bounced back with a birdie. Then another. Then another. Then the Couple GC Veteran could not stop making birdies.
Muñoz made 13 Birdies in his last 14 holes in the club in Chatham Hills to shoot a 12-under 59.
It is the third sub-60 round in the history of Liv Golf and is supposed to be the only sub-60 round on an Elite Professional Golf Tour with a double bogey, according to the data analysts of the competition.
“Great, great day,” said Muñoz.
Starting his round on the second hole, Birdied the fourth but followed it with a double bogey on the fifth par-4. He then walked in for Birdie on the Par-4 Sixth, and created a piece of eight consecutive birdies that set a new LIV golf record.
Recordrun
After a par at the par-3 14th hole, he ended his round with another five birdies, including a 3-foot putt on his last hole, the par-4 first. The 14 total birdies in its round is also a competition record.
“I did eight birdies in a row. I bound my personal record,” said Muñoz, whose previous low round was on Liv Golf 62 and previous career low, 60.
“Only 13 out of 14, it’s crazy.
The historic Tour of Muñoz gives him a lead of three shots 4ACES GC captain Dustin Johnson with four other players – including the Captain of Muñoz Joaquin Niemann – Bound for the third at 7 under after the shooting of 64s.
No surprise that Koppel TOP The team leader board with a collective 23 below, four shots better than 4aces GC.
Niemann himself seemed to be on a 59-watch after an opening 6-under 28 on his front nine to determine the early pace.
Step by step
Although he was unable to maintain the momentum on his last nine, he came a round closer to the depressing of Legion XIII captain Jon Rahm as individual champion of Liv Golf.
Niemann started the day with a lead of more than 12 points about Rahm in their battle for the seasonal crown.
With Rahm who shot a 4-under 67 in the same group, Niemann raised his lead to a projected 27.18 points with two rounds left in the regular season.
“In a sense it feels a bit like a game game,” said Niemann. “… I think he is a great competitor. He is someone who never gives up, and he is a hunter.”
Rahm’s best chance to successfully defend his title of last year is to win the tournament and hope that Niemann does not finish second.
For now, both players are hunting Muñoz, who is looking for his first Liv Golf individual tournament -victory.
Hot putter
He has credited the chip-in on the sixth as a way to forget the double bogey, and then his putter took over, while he rolled in three puts between 14-17 feet during his eight-Birdie piece.
He rolled in three more Birdie Putts between 15-21 feet of holes 16 to 18.
“That really made me believe it was possible,” said Muñoz about breaking 60.
He still had his last hole, the 405-Yard first bird. A perfect ride set up his headwind approach with its 50 degrees Wig from 127 meters that he stuck to three feet.
His Caddy Jose Campra convinced him to use his 3-wood from the Tee.
“It is one of the clubs that I don’t really like in my bag, but of course it just required a little more focus, a little more trust,” said Muñoz. “We managed to continue.”
Video Watch
Niemann, who had the most recent sub-60 round of the competition (59 in the first round in last year’s season opener in Mayakoba), heard about Muñoz’s run of eight consecutive Birdies and began to follow the progress of his teammate on the course video orders.
“He is a really hot player,” said Niemann. “We have often seen that. Of course he has made it. It is quite cool and it is nice to have one of those runs. Now I can’t say that I am the only one in the team with a 59.”
The field average of 68,519 in the first round is almost 2-1/2 strokes under par at the club in Chatham Hills.
A total of 17 eagles were made on Friday, including 10 out of 554-Yard Par-5 Seventh, which played an average of the battle of 4,148. That made it the easiest gap in a single round in Liv Golf History.
“With this type of golf course you have to be able to put on the gas and get started,” said 4aces star Patrick Reed after photographing a 7-under 64, which made him in third place. (Courtesy Liv Golf)
