On Sunday evening Megan Moroney became the first artist to win the best country trophy at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Moroney accepted the “Moon Man” spotted by De Waaier while walking the red carpet prior to the Primetime show in UBS Arena in New York. Moroney won for “Am I Okay?”, “The main single of her 2024 album with the same name.
“Thank you for voting. Thanks for everything, all the support this year,” said Moroney During a pre-show acceptance speech. “Guys, I literally fought over a ‘moon man’ statue at White Elephant last year at Christmas and now I have a real one. I am crazy. This is much better than home goods.”
After she thanked a handful of employees and supporters, she added later: “This is so cool. I am something like that, what the hell do I do here?”
Moroney defeated a stacked competitive field with Jelly Roll (nominated for his song “Liar”), Chris Stapleton (for “Think I’m in Love Twith You”), Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood (for the duet “I’m love you”) and Morgan Wallenon (for “4×4” for “4×4”)
Showrunners announced the best Country Award last month; it was One of the two new trophies Presented during the live show on Sunday evening, member of the best pop artist. The 2025 VMAs were broadcast on CBS and MTV on Sunday evening.
VMAs adds the best land category
The addition of the best land category comes months after MTV Sister Network CMT has canceled the 2025 CMT Music Awards Thanks to the merger between paramount and Skydance Media. Underwood often dominated the CMT Music Awards spotted by the fan and won nine times video of the year between 2007 and 2021. Jelly Roll was the last artist who won video of the year, scoring the trophy In 2024 for his single ‘Need A Gunst’.
A handful of national artists also earned nodding in the all-genre categories. Fast-growing hit maker Ella Langley received a best new artist nomination on the heels of her breakout 2024 album Hangover. Jelly Roll competed for four trophies: best country, video for good, best hip hop (for a collaboration with Eminem) and best alternative (for a duet with MGK).
In addition, Buzzyworthy Artists Shaboozey and Dasha scored each nodding in the MTV Push Performance of the Year category, while Redalls participated in Artist of the Year, Best album and Song of the Summer.
