Highlights of the project include holes improvements, updated putting surfaces and bunkers in Seth Raynor Design
Mountain Lake – a residential community in the Lake District in Central Florida – will start with an extensive restoration project on his golf course designed by Seth Raynor, starting in April 2026.
Led by the well -known course architect Tyler Rae, the restoration project will include three important components: design improvements to each gap inspired by the study of extensive archive photos in combination with newly discovered historical information about the course, the reconstruction and redesign of the well surfaces, recovery and placement of bunkers.
Rae, the main architect at Curses in New York, Illinois and South Carolina, has restored other original Seth Raynor designs at Lookout Mountain Club in Georgia and Wanumetomony Golf and Country Club in Rhode Island. The restoration project of the Golf Course of Mountain Lake starts in April and must be completed by October 2026.
“Tyler Rae has drawn up an exceptional plan to restore our golf course to Seth Raynor’s inspiration,” says General Manager / Chief Operating Officer Eric von Hofen. “This restoration project will not only solidify Mountain Lake as one of the most sought after golf experiences in the state, but also improve the aesthetic attraction and allure of our pleasant community. I have been part of countless golf course projects throughout the country, I have all the extent of trust Tyler Rae will return our golf course.”
An important aspect of the restoration will be the design improvements that take place during the course. Mountain Lake gained access to historical information such as Raynor’s Sketch from 1915 of the first nine holes, revision drawings by Raynor’s Protege, Charles Banks, who date from 1929, a technical drawing from 1935 and 1941 antennas. Rae and his design team carefully studied these documents – all of whom gave them insight into the evolution of the golf course from the beginning to the current state.
Remarkable design improvements include:
The recreation of the original Punch Bowl Green in the third gap that was seen in Raynor’s 1915 routering and in early 1917 photos.
Restring the Fairway bunkering in the fourth hole to match the design that can be seen in Raynor’s 1915 routing. A large, dominant bunker on the left will replace the superior who are currently found on that side, forcing golfers to decide how much they want to bite from the tee.
The water features at Nos. 8 and 9 green complexes will be reformed and reformed with aquatic plants, improving the appearance of these two holes.
Restoring the front bunker at no. 12 to create a dramatic visual of the T -shirt and to offer golf lines for golfers to aim their Tee shots. This golf hole is a blind tee-shot-a rarity in Florida. The 12th Green will be rebuilt with a softened layer that runs through the center of the green to create more flags and considerably improved playability.
In the 13th hole of the club, called the ‘road hole’, forces will be recreated to promote the strategy of the tee. A Fairway bunker at about 100 meters from the Green will also be recreated, so that the strategy and location of the bunker complex of the scholar / progressive bunker on the original road gap on the old track in St. Andrews in Scotland is simulated.
Relandscaping Many important areas on the golf course with native living oaks, grasses and native plants will also be a priority. This planting will add texture and depth to the golf experience.
“We have always been in love with Mountain Lake and the historic form in the empire of Golf and the short golf architecture career of Seth J. Raynor,” says Rae. “We also have a high respect for [Mountain Lake developer] Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. And his team that initially explained the real estate site plan with his meandering roads and lot lines with a majestic view.
“Mountain Lake is a magical place that has fascinated us since they first focused our eyes on the building more than 25 years ago and we are humble and honored to” polish the jewel “and really to emphasize the special nature of the building in the coming years.”
The restoration plan of the golf course will also focus on modernizing and improving the bunkers and greens. The bunkers will be updated to temper the rising costs for repairs and maintenance, and the TIF-Eagle Bermuda putting surfaces will be recreated to measurements, shapes and characterisations that are depicted in the historical photos.
“Returning the greens from below ground level will enable us to ensure that the putting surfaces will be consistent during the winter season,” adds chief inspector Brad Quackenbush. “Correct drainage and soil permeability is crucial for our health and life of the peat grass,”
Founded in 1915 and designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., on more than 1,000 hectares of rolling hills and countless lakes, Mountain Lake has panoramas from the surrounding central landscape of Florida and adjacent Bok Tower Gardens. The secure enclave has a wide range of houses, including historic houses built by legendary architects for some of the most recognizable names in the country. Current homeowners are stewards of the history of their house, while maintaining the fascinating exterior of these charming homes and updating the interior with equipment and furniture.
The Colony House, recorded in the National Register of Historic Places, is the social hub for the community and offers sophisticated dining places in 1916 to casual cookouts at the swimming pool. A fitness center, library, 37 guest suites and full-service caretaker services are also available at the Colony House, with Croquet Gazons just a stone throw and a racquets facility to the right of the first fairway. Mountain Lake has also nestled a shooting range in an old clay line on the edge of the community.
