Turin – More than forty years of activity (from 1903 to 1948) of the great American photographer Ed Weston is told in the spaces of CAMERA – Italian Center for Photography in Turin.
From the first tests marked by Pictorialism to its full recognition as the central figure of pure photography, the period from 1903 to 1948 will be explored by the exhibition. Edward Weston. The question of shapesexpected from February 12 to June 2.
The route, organized by Fundación Mapfre in collaboration with CAMERA, arrives in Italy for the first time after stops in Madrid and Barcelona. A selection of 171 images compiled by Sérgio Mah produces a large anthology that describes all the phases of the photographer’s production, who managed to capture the poetry of reality in the photo, abandoning the stereotype of photography, understood as art or simply ‘posing’.
Weston’s life was devoted to photography, from 1902, when he was given his first camera at the age of sixteen, which he began using in the parks of Chicago, until 1958, the year of his death in Carmel, a small town in California. The corpus offers a European perspective on the legacy of one of the leading figures of modern North American photography and provides an aesthetic and conceptual counterpoint to the modernism of the early European photographic avant-garde. The project aims to explore the role of Weston – co-founder of Group f/64 and the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles – in consolidating photography as a poetic and intellectual language, as well as a tool for interpreting America’s lifestyle between the two wars. Using his large format camera as his tool of choice, Weston produced black and white images with extraordinary clarity and rich detail.
The precision of his works runs through still lifes, nudes, landscapes and portraits that are considered iconic today and offer a unique perspective on the process of photography’s affirmation and the central role played in contemporary visual culture.
