More than $45 million gets green light for expansion of Colombia’s Estadio Metropolitano in Barranquilla – Inside World Football

October 14 – One of Colombia’s most iconic stadiums, the Estadio Metropolitano, located in Barranquilla, is about to undergo a major facelift.

The city council publishes a public tender to expand the current capacity of the venue from 46,692 to more than 60,000 seats. However, the redevelopment will not be cheap, with an estimated cost of 180 billion Colombian pesos (£34.6 million/€39.7 million/$45.9 million).

The Metropolitano opened in 1986, which is recent by South American standards, and is home to Atlético Junior and the Colombian national team. Mayor of Barranquilla and president of Atlético Junior Alejandro Char (certainly a coincidence) announced earlier this year that the renovation would take the stadium “to another level,” bringing it up to international standards for major tournaments and cultural events.

The redevelopment of the venue reflects a growing trend across the South American continent, where outdated stadiums need to be modernized or, in some cases, completely rebuilt.

The Metropolitano’s expansion is a statement of intent, signaling that Atlético Junior and Colombian football will not be left behind as the stadiums enter a new era of modernity.
