Moose weekly recap: Moose blank Wolves, bounce back in Iowa

While the Winnipeg Jets continuing to struggle, the Manitoba Moose are thriving, winning ten of their last thirteen games following a midweek matchup against the Chicago Wolves at Allstate Arena and a back-to-back weekend in Iowa against the Wild at Casey’s Center.

Wednesday, December 3 – Manitoba 5, Chicago 0

The Moose had played Chicago four times during their six-game homestand, winning three of those matchups, and continued to dominate the Wolves, this time in their own building. Manitoba was defeated 30-25, but controlled the scoresheet.

Brayden Yager continued to build confidence in the first period as he opened the scoring with his fourth of the season. Samuel Fagemo added his seventh to give the Moose a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

There was no scoring in the second period, but in the third Walker Duehr struck twice in 59 seconds, his 7th and 8th, to push Manitoba into a 4-0 lead. Phillip Di Giuseppe added his sixth on the power play late in regulation to cap off a dominant offensive display.

Domenic DiVincentiis posted a 30-save shutout as Manitoba picked up its second straight win.

Saturday, December 6 – Iowa 3, Manitoba 0

The Moose saw plenty of opportunities against a struggling Iowa team, but it was just one of those nights where nothing worked. Manitoba fired 30 shots at Cal Petersen, including six on power plays, but could not solve the Wild goaltender.

After a scoreless first period, Nicolas Aube-Kubel broke the deadlock midway through the second period with his 4th, which stood as the game winner.

Iowa led 1-0 after 40 minutes.

Midway through the third, Bradley Marek added his second of the season to make it 2-0. Former Winnipeg Ice captain Carson Lambos sealed the 3-0 win with an empty-net goal.

DiVincentiis stopped 25 shots in the loss, Manitoba’s second loss in the last four games.

Sunday, December 7 – Manitoba 4, Iowa 3

Manitoba and Iowa met again Sunday afternoon in the second half of the back-to-back, and this time the Moose got revenge.

Kale Clague wasted no time scoring just 17 seconds into a run-in shot from the slot to give Manitoba a 1-0 lead.

Michael Milne and Aube-Kubel answered for Iowa. Milne tied the game just over two minutes later, and Aube-Kubel scored his 5th, this one short-handed, to put the Wild ahead 2–1 after the opening frame.

On a power play in the second period, Clague set up Di Giuseppe for a one-timer to make it 2-2. Ryan Sandelin restored Iowa’s lead with his first of the season in the final minute of the period.

The Moose struck quickly in the third. Clague banged in his second of the night amid a battle up front, and just 47 seconds later Jaret Anderson-Dolan sent a feed from Ville Heinola past Petersen, who had taken over for Rousseau, to put Manitoba up 4-3. Ethan Frisch collected his first point in the antlers after the starting signal.

Ope, I’ll sneak past you

Manitoba held on for the 4-3 win, their tenth win in their last thirteen games, as Isaac Poulter made 18 saves for his second victory with his hometown Moose.

“I think we did a great job of responding. We had a great start to the game and I thought we played a solid game through and through. If we follow them and suffocate them, there’s not many teams that can create something out of that,” he said.support Clague after Sunday’s win.

The Moose now return home for six straight matchups, starting with a pair against the Wild next weekend.
