Moisturizing Tallow Lip Balm

Dry lips are something I think more about in the winter, but they also happen in the summer. Especially if you live a lot in a really hot climate or sweat (like me). This lip balm recipe has a healthy sebum for a natural way to pamper your lips!

What is Tallow?

Some of the latest health trends have vegan and vegetable ingredients. And although there are a number of really good vegetable ingredients in the field of skin care, animals can be a nutritional forces. If those ingredients come from WeideGedaan, free spout and otherwise healthy animals.

Tallow makes a comeback and gets his time in the spotlight. This old fat -based fat comes from cows, but you can also make fat from pigs (lard) and other animals. Sheep Tallow is also supposed to be really good, but I used beef in this lip balm.

Tallow is naturally high in the fatty acids Palmitate, Stearate and Oleate. The top layers of our skin are largely composed of lipids (fats), and this barrier must be protected to prevent skin damage. Because Tallow is an animal fat, it has the unique ability to communicate with the lipids of our skin. A meta-analysis also discovered that sebum can increase the fatty acid composition in our skin, plus it hydrates and hydrates.

In total, Tallow makes a great option for protecting and hydrating our lips. You can read more about the benefits of Tallow here.

Other lip -fed ingredients

Tallow in itself will work well, but it is temperature sensitive. It also does not travel so well in a lip baler. I have added beeswax to this recipe to add a little more strength and to offer even more a protective barrier on the skin. You can make this with half sebum and half beeswax, but I also wanted to add a liquid carrier oil.

I used apricot oil, but every liquid carrier oil will work. Olive oil, avocado -oil, jojoba -oil, macadamia nut oil and sweet almond oil are all good options.

And finally I used some essential oils to give it a nice scent. Make sure you use it that are safe for lips to prevent irritation or light sensitivity. The last thing you want is to smear a lip balm on a lime flavor on the beach and get a nasty lip sunburn! Here is a list of some essential oils that can be used safely on the lips (as long as they are diluted).

  • Sweet orange
  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Incense
  • Grapefruit
  • Patchouli
  • Peppermint
  • Geranium
  • Mandarine

You can also mix and match to make your own scent! The recommended maximum dilution ratio for lips is often (but not always) 4 to 5 percent. These recipes use the essential oils by 2%, but you can change the quantity (or omit) if desired. You can find High quality essential oils here.

  • Add the beeswax, sebum and liquid oil in a small glass bowl or the top of a double kettle.

  • Fill the bottom pot with a few centimeters of water and place the bowl or other pot on it.

  • Bring the water over medium heat low boil. Stir the ingredients while melting.

  • Once melted, add the essential oil.

  • Pour the mixture into the lip balm containers immediately and let cool to room temperature.

If your sebum at room temperature is very soft, you may need to add more beeswax to get a sturdy consistency.

How many lip balms makes this?

Typical lip balm pipes contain slightly less than 1 teaspoon. This recipe fills around 10 lip balm pipes, but you can increase or lower the amount as desired. I used metal lip slides and this recipe delivered 5 of them.
