Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not expected to attend the Canada-Hosted Group of Seven (G-7) top, a first in six years and a sign of icy tires between the two nations.

Modi has not received an invitation for the top that is held from 15 to 17 June, said officials in New Delhi and asked not to be mentioned because the discussions are private. It is the privilege of the host country to invite non-members, the people said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India did not immediately respond to an e -mail to ask for comments. “I don’t have any information about this issue at the moment,” Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry, told reporters on 22 May.

A spokesperson for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the country would confirm G-7ist “in due course”.

India is not a member of the G-7, a group of seven of the world’s richest countries, consisting of the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan. But India has been invited since 2019 to participate in the top every year.

Simmering tensions

Indian officials said that Modi will probably not attend the top, even if invited, because it is not yet clear how the newly chosen Carney government will tackle the concerns of India about Sikh -Sparatistic groups in Canada.

The ties between the two countries remain frayed on the alleged involvement of the modes government in murders and extortion focused on Sikhs in Canada who argue for curing a separate home country in India for followers of faith.

The gorge began in September 2023 when the then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Indian officials accused of controlling the murder of prominent Sikh activist Hardep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. The Indian government denied any involvement and called the accusations absurd.

The Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and India’s S Jaischar spoke on the phone last week and increased optimism about better tires.

Ottawa, who does not expand an invitation to India, is expected because the India Nation is expected to overtake Japan and will be the fourth largest economy in March next year, according to estimates of the International Monetary Fund, although it will still be the world’s low economies per head of the population.

The exclusion will probably dent the image of modes of a world leader of consequences among his followers. Opposition legislators described India who was closed from the top as ‘another diplomatic Bungle’.

Canada has invited other leaders of non-G-7 countries, including Ukrainian President Volodyymyr Zenskiy, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

According to Canada, global economic stability and growth, international peace and the digital transition will surpass the top agenda.
