MMA hunter Marcin Szoltysik sheds some light on his notorious Insta tap this weekend.
While most MMA fans had focused their eyes on UFC Perth and the back-to-back events of the PFL abroad, Babilon MMA 54 offered an eight-fighter card in Poland with a heavyweight scrap between Jacek Kujtowski and Marcin Szoltysik.
Just when the fight started, Szoltysik knelt on the canvas and tapped, which caused widespread confusion during the location and on social media.
Speculation immediately went unbridled online, with some who believed it was nothing more than cowardice. Szoltysik, however, tried to give some insight into the controversial decision.
“I went to the octhoek and gave it immediately,” read the message from Szoltysik (via International MMA expert Matyseek). “It was not a weakness, that was conscious rebellion. It was rebellion against liars and manipulators who claim to be my team, but in reality treat their hunters as aids for their own gain.
“From the start they deliberately supported my preparations – they wanted me to be unprepared and easily replaceable. They don’t care about sports, passion or dedication – only to make money and connections. They tried to” make me in “cannon food”, just as they had done with others before. I don’t let that happen.
“The opponent has nothing to do with this, I have all the respect for him. I personally apologized in the OctagonBecause that’s how you have to treat a real warrior. I also apologize to the fans – my heart breaks and tears come in my eyes, but otherwise I couldn’t do it. Dignity and honor are especially.
“This was my call from protest against the lies, manipulation and exploitation of athletes. I will not be sold. Enough is enough.”
Szoltysik is not the first athlete to believe that their team has set them up to fail. Lower gyms often come in to deliver a specific number of hunters to fill in positions during an event. Fewer ethical gyms can do this by using amongers prepared students who have little chance against more experienced opponents.
However, it is unusual that the ‘cannon food’ reaches the cage before it chooses not to continue with the fight.
It was clear that this was not one of those cases.
