MLB News: Brewers extend Murphy, pitch-rigging trial pushed to fall, Chisholm wants to be next Ohtani

Happy Thursday, Dodgers fans. Cactus League games are just around the corner for the Boys in Blue.

As we wait for the joy of seeing World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto return to the mound on Saturday, here are some of the top headlines from Major League Baseball.

Brewers extend manager for three years

The reigning back-to-back National League Manager of the Year was awarded by the team on Thursday.

The Milwaukee Brewers gave Pat Murphy a three-year extension. ESPN reports.

October 16, 2025; Los Angeles, California, USA; Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Sal Frelick (10), manager Pat Murphy (49), center fielder Jackson Chourio (11), second baseman Brice Turang (2) and design hitter Christian Yelich (22) are introduced for game three of the NLCS during the 2025 MLB playoffs against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. In addition to the three years – 2026 to 2028 – the deal also includes a club option for 2029, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

It also guarantees $8.95 million in new money and makes him one of the highest-paid managers in the MLB. ESPN’s Jeff Passan said.

Pitch-Rigging trial can be moved to October

The trial of Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, who are accused of giving pitches to gamblers in exchange for kickbacks, will likely be moved to the fall. Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Both have pleaded not guilty and are out on bail, though they remain on MLB’s restricted list.

Their trial was scheduled to begin in May, although Judge Kiyo A. Matsumoto “suggested she would ultimately move the date to the fall,” Meisel wrote.

Those involved were instructed to submit their desired new trial date by Monday at the latest.

If October is indeed the new trial date, it will be interesting to see if the legal proceedings overlap with the World Series.

Yankee says he will do something only Ohtani has ever done

Infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. has made public its intentions to join Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani in an exclusive club that was empty until last season and now includes only the Japanese two-way player.

Chisholm told The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner that he wants to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season, which Ohtani did for the first time in history last year.

“He recalled that 50-50 has only been achieved once in MLB history and shrugged,” Kirschner wrote. “You look at the second one,” Chisholm said.

The quest may seem nearly impossible, but Yankees teammate Aaron Judge expressed his confidence to Kirschner.

“He can really accomplish anything,” Judge said.
