MLB gives suspension to the Matt Chapman of Giants

MLB has issued a suspension of one game to Giants Third Honkman Matt Chapman for the ‘Pushen’ of Kyle Freeland during last night’s game. Chapman and Freeland each received unknown fines, just like Willy Adames and Rafael Devers. Chapman appealed the suspension and is in the line -up on third base against Germán Márquez tonight.

The discipline stems from that of last night Bank-Clearing Incident On Coors Field. Devers hit a towering home run of freeland in the first half of the first inning. The Colorado world took an exception to Devers who took the time to admire the shot. They came in a screaming game by the time that Devers reached first base and the banks were empty.

Chapman was one of the first players from the Dugout in San Francisco and seemed to push Freeland when he arrived at the hill. Adames, who was on the deck for the Devers Homer, was also in the mix. He and Freeland each swept at each other and exchanged words, although the situation remained relatively harmless. The banks and bullpens have been emptied, but it never really escalated in a fight. Chapman, Adames and Freeland were all thrown out of the game. Devers was not ejected and completed his home run a few minutes later, while Antonio Senzatela warmed up to replace freeland.

The suspension is not of enormous significance, although the Giants have won nine of their last 10 games to withdraw into the periphery of the Wild Card Race. Unless the prohibition on appeal is reversed, San Francisco has to play a man shortly for every game that Chapman records. Christian Koss would probably come to second base and move Casey Schmitt to the hot corner.
