“In response to the rapid transformation of the Chinese car industry,” Mitsubishi Motors has terminated his motor activities at Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi Motors Motor Manufacturing (SAME) in China and the joint venture partner.
The same was founded in August 1997 and has been supplying engines to Mitsubishi and other Chinese car manufacturers since 1998. With this development, Mitsubishi Motors is no longer present at the largest car market in the world – it stopped making cars in China two years ago.
According to Car news ChinaThe China story of the Japanese Marque started in 1973 with export of medium service. By the early nineties, the two engine JV’s drive lines delivered around 30% of the vehicles produced in their own country (you remember the Chery Eastar, right?).
In 2012, the GAC-Mitsubishi JV was born-50% owned by GAC, 30% by Mitsubishi Motors and 20% by Mitsubishi Corporation. 2018 was the peak – 144,000 units were sold, including 105,600 Outlanders – but the sale dropped only four years later to 33,600 units, and in October 2023 the Changsha production and operations of Mitsubishi were sold to Gac Aion.
