The previous deadline for online learning was February 12, but parental concerns and the continued presence of ICE prompted further adjustments for student safety.
Minneapolis Public Schools will expand its online learning options for students who are afraid to attend school in person due to concerns about federal immigration enforcement activities.
Teachers will provide simultaneous instruction to students in classrooms and students participating from home through April 6, according to a statement from Minneapolis Public Schools district officials. The previous deadline for online instruction was February 12, but concerns from parents and the continued presence of ICE led to further adjustments for student safety.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and may return to full in-person learning sooner than April 6,” the district said. “If that happens, families participating in temporary online learning will be notified at least two weeks in advance.”
Parents and educators have expressed the need for immediate action to protect children. In a statementMinneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Lisa Sayes-Adams responded directly to these concerns, praising teachers and the community for ensuring all Minneapolis students could continue learning without fear.
“Our teachers and staff have once again shown why public education is the foundation of our community as we have supported our students in incredible ways,” said Sayes-Adams. “In a short time, we have created online learning opportunities, developed food support with community partners, provided alternative transportation options and connected families to other needed resources and support. I am so grateful for our staff and honored to serve as your Superintendent.”
Ongoing ICE activity in several other communities has prompted school districts in Minnesota, Ohio and California to offer virtual options to families who request them.
