An investigation is underway after a millionaire philanthropist was found shot to death at his retirement home in Maryland.
On Valentine’s Day, Robert Fuller, 87, was found dead of a gunshot wound in his apartment at the Cogir Potomac Senior Living facility in Potomac, Maryland.
Montgomery County police are investigating his death as a homicide, but provided no information on whether Fuller’s killer came from the inside or outside.
Detectives In handling the case, Fuller was “taken to the office of the chief medical examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.”

Police are investigating after a millionaire philanthropist was shot dead at a retirement home in Maryland.
On Saturday, Feb. 14, at approximately 7:34 a.m. local time, officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police and the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service “responded to the Cogir Potomac Senior Living facility in the 10800 block of Potomac Tennis Lane for a reported code,” according to a news release.
First responders then found 87-year-old Robert Fuller, Jr. “unresponsive in an apartment in the senior living facility,” the news release said.
Police said: “Life-saving measures were attempted but he was pronounced dead at the scene,” adding that officers at the scene “observed that Fuller had suffered head trauma and serious criminal activity was reported.”
In a statement, the Cogir Potomac Senior Living Facility sent a message memo to residents saying: “This was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to residents or staff.”
The memo continues: “Out of an abundance of caution, we have increased our safety measures and deployed additional security to provide additional peace of mind to our residents and families.”
Fuller leaves a legacy as a generous giver.
The retired Navy Reserve officer and attorney donated millions to various community organizations in the town of Augusta, Maine, where he previously lived.
His donations include $1.64 million to Cony High School in Augusta and other major donations to local hospitals and historical societies.
Robert Fuller was also the great-great-grandnephew of Supreme Court Justice Melville Fuller, who presided over Plessy v. Ferguson.
