FIRST STAR: COMPLEXITY JANE. Laurel Park hosted the Thirty Eight Go Go Stakes on Sunday as a field of seven covered 1 1/16 miles on the main track. Complexity Jane improved to 3-for-3 on the track in her first start at Laurel since winning the Weber City Miss Stakes here in April with a 3 1/4-length victory. She took second early on, allowing longshot Di’s Surprise to set the early pace. She moved to attack the leader on the backstretch, took control into the final corner and rode away to victory under Sheldon Russell. She is now 3-for-3 at Laurel, while finishing unplaced elsewhere in her two starts. She is owned by Golden Lion Racing and trained by Brittany Russell.

SECOND STAR: BALBOA. The Maryland road to the Preakness began Saturday with the James F. Lewis III Stakes for 2-year-old males at six furlongs. California interloper Balboa, well beaten in his last two starts, took his first career victory by 5 1/4 lengths. Breaking from post position nine in the 10-horse field, he battled with Max Capacity for the early lead and took a small advantage over that rival on the turn. The max capacity started to fade as they turned for home, and Balboa kicked away. Hollywood Import tried to reduce the margin in the late stages, but his best result was only second best as Balboa increased his margin as he was on the verge. He ran the distance on a muddy track in 1:11.87 and improved to 2-for-5 lifetime with career earnings of $129,600. He is owned by the SF Racing/Starlight Racing conglomerate, trained by Brittany Russell and ridden by Sheldon Russell.

THIRD STAR: DOC’S WONDER. One race earlier, the road to the Black-Eyed Susan began in the Smart Halo Stakes. After a pair of stakes victories at Colonial Downs, Just Philtored walked away as the seven-money favorite in the five-horse field. Second choice Prosecco Rita went straight to the front and maintained a large lead as they approached the barbed wire. While Just Philtored never shot and finished third, Doc’s Miracle gobbled up ground on the outside under the urging of Yedsit Hazlewood. Doc’s Miracle came around in the last few steps and won by three-quarters of a length. She covered six furlongs in 1:12.15 for her second win in eight starts. She is a private breeder of Daniel Crowley and trainer Gary Capuano, the latter under the name Non Stop Stable. Capuano also bred Just Philtored.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: COMPLEXITY JANE. Once again she showed her affection for Laurel with a win in the Thirty Eight Go Go.

SECOND STAR: BALBOA. Get the boxing puns out of your system now – this might not be the last we hear about this promising colt.

THIRD STAR: DOC’S WONDER. It caused unrest in the Smart Halo and continued a fantastic season for Capuano and Hazlewood.

CARELSTAD

FIRST STAR: THE SKY FALLS. Came off the pace and defeated longtime leader Petty Perfect to win the My Sister Pearl Stakes for West Virginia-bred fillies and mares on Saturday.

SECOND STAR: PARTY TIME FOR ME. The winner of the Autumn Stakes earlier this year went on a journey to win an allowance dash for breeder, trainer and owner Anthony Grigsby on Friday.

THIRD STAR: TICO GRANDE. Won a West Virginia-bred dash by 5 1/4 lengths Thursday for his third straight win.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: FOXY JUNIOR. She placed second in the last final of the Maryland Million Distaff, returning to her home state on Wednesday and capturing an open sprint by a length as the even-money choice.

SECOND STAR: FACTOR YOU AND ME IN. Led for every step in a first-level sprint on Monday for his fourth win of the year in 12 starts.

THIRD STAR: MYCHEL SANCHEZ. Three winners accompanied home on Tuesday and another two on Wednesday.
