Michael Carrick on Man United’s inspiring second-half comeback
United got off to a slow start and fell behind just four minutes into the match when Maxence Lacroix headed home from a corner.
Despite finishing the first half strongly, Carrick was seen jogging animatedly through the tunnel during the break, clearly sensing the need for change.
He told reporters after the match (quotes via the sun):
“It’s the first time we’ve been in this situation at halftime.
“At half-time it was about being in that position and how we responded to it. We showed that personality and belief. We wanted to make more runs and be a bit more aggressive in attacking their backline.”
The manager played down his own role in the turnaround and emphasized that the adjustments were minor.
“It was just a few minor tweaks to the format, maybe a few ideas. To be honest, it wasn’t huge and I don’t take much credit for that. It was more about finding a way.”
The tactical shift paid off when Matheus Cunha was fouled for a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes coolly converted to level the scores.
Benjamin Sesko scores winner again
The comeback was completed in the 65th minute by the man of the moment, Benjamin Sesko.
The Slovenian striker, making his first league start under Carrick, justified his selection by rising highest to curl home Fernandes’ cross.
It is Sesko’s fourth goal in his last five games, cementing his reputation as one of the competition’s most clinical finishers in 2026.
After a difficult start to his United career, the £74million signing appears to be flourishing under Carrick’s guidance.
Manchester United continue their revival under Carrick as the battle for the top four intensifies.
Injuries to Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were the only negatives for Manchester United as they need their best players fit as we enter the final stretch.
