Manchester United’s transformation under Michael Carrick has lifted the mood around Old Trafford but has also attracted serious interest from a host of Premier League clubs, according to a new report.
Interim for Amorim
The decision to fire Ruben Amorim in early January was a signal of chaos; a sign that something was rotten in the state of Manchester.
However, a month after the departure of the prickly Portuguese, the Red Devils are flying with four wins from four under Carrick the Caretaker, who, in the wake of Amorim, took the reins as interim head coach until the end of the season.
United currently sit fourth in the Premier League, with this afternoon’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur moving them within three points of third-placed Aston Villa.
England’s coefficient in European tournaments means fifth place will be enough to secure Champions League football, further strengthening the case for a return to the continent’s elite competition next season.
Carrick’s job as interim is to qualify for the Champions League, with INEOS seeing the inconsistencies of United’s rivals as the perfect opportunity for the club to capitalize – and he is certainly fulfilling his brief so far.
Carrick catches the eye
The immediate way in which the 44-year-old Englishman has improved the team, both on and off the pitch, has been nothing short of remarkable, with Manchester City and Arsenal facing the sword in the process.
The manner in which he has achieved this suggests that his predecessor was attempting something needlessly complicated, and by simply reversing Amorim’s egregious decisions – dropping Kobbie Mainoo and playing Bruno Fernandes as a deep-lying midfielder, to name a few – he has found a winning formula.
However, it would be reductive to attribute Carrick’s success solely to his ‘anti-Amorim’ behavior as three clubs in the division were impressed enough to include him on their shortlist.
There are many calls for INEOS to appoint him on a permanent basis, despite their plan to wait until the summer to determine Amorim’s long-term successor.
However, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Fulham are all “closely monitoring Carrick’s progress” as each team faces uncertainty over their manager, according to a report from TEAMtalk.
Ironically, all three – Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner and Marco Silva – are all being considered by United’s hierarchy, meaning someone could take Carrick’s place if the former midfielder takes their role in the opposite direction.
If INEOS makes the move to offer Carrick the hotseat full-time, they may have to do so earlier than the summer if one of their domestic rivals tries to get there first.
