After losing Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo this offseason, the Mets made their first addition to the offense by signing Jorge Polanco to a two-year deal worth $40 million, The Post confirmed.
The 32-year-old Polanco spent the previous two seasons in Seattle and had 26 home runs, an OPS of .821 and a career-high OPS-plus of 134 last year.
Polanco played 38 games at second base last season, but mainly served as a DH for the Mariners.
In 2024, he played second base in 112 games.
The switch-hitter will replace at least some of the power lost with Alonso signing with Baltimore and Nimmo after being traded to Texas.
Marcus Semien, whom the Mets acquired in exchange for Nimmo, is among the best defensive second basemen in the Majors, so Polanco is expected to serve primarily as a first baseman and DH. according to The Post’s Jon Heyman.

But Polanco, a shortstop earlier in his career with the Twins, has played just one game at first base in his Major League career.
The signing of Polanco is another significant step in a period of change this off-season for Queens, following the collapse in the second half of last year that cost them a place in the play-offs.
They also saw Edwin Diaz sign with the Dodgers and figured Devin Williams, signed earlier in the offseason to a three-year, $51 million deal, would serve as closer after seeing him struggle in the same role last season with the Yankees.
The Mets remain in search of a new outfielder, as well as rotation and bullpen help, as they lost sidearmer Tyler Rogers to the Blue Jays in free agency.
