After surviving his first outing as a long reliever, Frankie Montas would like to think he has mastered his new role.

The displaced starting pitcher threw the eighth and ninth innings on Friday, making one point over that piece, albeit allowed with three hits allowed and two free walk.

Montas was bumped from the rotation last week, giving Nolan McLean the opportunity to pitch in his Major League-winning debut Saturday, which he helped the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Mariners at Citi Field in Leiden.

“They did good to give me the time to warm up and everything, so it was pretty good,” Montas noted that he knew half a inning in advance that he would throw.

The relegation of Montas took place after he threw the club to an ERA of 6.38 in his first eight performances, from the end of June.

The right-handed, who did not throw in the victory of Saturday, missed the first half of the season rehabilitation of a high-quality LAT stem.

What is the focus of Montas if he tries to get on the right track?

“I only try to attack Hitters and stay in the attack mode,” said Montas. “I try to make better pitches and better counts. I try to finish guys and understand how my pitches play.”

In a team that has had difficulty receiving length from starting pitchers, Montas was able to receive a lot of work in his new role, especially after the departure of Paul Blackburn, who was designated for assignment after Friday’s game – the Mets needed the schedule for McLean.

The Mets Bullpen has struggled lately, but Montas expects that script will turn around.

“It’s not just the people in the bullpen, we’re all going through now,” said Montas. “It is difficult to point out fingers of single boys, but I feel that I have been able to be in the Bullpen in recent days and the way in which these guys are preparing for a game. They are just good luck. It’s not because they don’t prepare well or don’t try.”

Montas, who was signed until 2026 – he owes $ 17 million for next season if he does not unsubscribe – said he hopes for another shot in the rotation this season if the chance occurs.

“I consider myself a good starter,” he said. “I just have to repair what to repair and continue to work.”
