- Mercedes-AMG will unveil an electric SUV coupe at the end of 2027 Coach.
- The SUV coupe will be closely related to the more traditionally shaped AMG electric SUV that will be released early next year.
- Both SUVs will share a platform with the production version of the GT XX concept, which will produce more than 1,000 horsepower from a three-motor powertrain.
Mercedes-AMG is preparing to go electric. While the German automaker has already made AMG versions of the EQE sedan, EQE SUV and EQS sedan, the performance division is going one step further by launching AMG’s first exclusive electric car, pictured above, later this year. That sedan, based on the GT XX concept, will be followed by an SUV. Now, according to CoachMercedes-AMG will add a third special EV to its range with an SUV coupe.
The SUV coupe was confirmed Coach by Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG, who will soon take charge of Mercedes-Benz’s Top End Vehicle (TEV) Group, which includes Mercedes-Maybach and the G-Class. Schiebe, who will be succeeded at AMG by Stefan Weckbach as of July 1, explains Coach that AMG will “double the number of SUVs”, which now account for more than half of AMG’s sales.
This electric SUV coupe will be unveiled in the second half of 2027 and will be essentially the same as the AMG electric SUV, albeit with a more dramatically sloping roofline. The two SUVs, as well as the sedan, will all ride on the new AMG.EA platform, which brings a unique round-cell battery pack and 800-volt electrical architecture. A three-motor drivetrain, with one motor at the front and two on the rear axle, should deliver more than 1000 hp.
The SUV coupe will follow the more traditionally shaped electric SUV, which is expected to be unveiled in early 2027. But AMG’s first dedicated EV should be unveiled later this year and will serve as an indirect replacement for the gas-powered AMG GT 4-Door.
Last year, the production car was previewed by the GT XX concept, which produced 1,341 horsepower, could reach a top speed of 220 mph and average charging speeds of 850 kilowatts. That would make it possible to add a range of 400 kilometers in five minutes, Mercedes claimed.
As the unveiling of the electric AMG four-door approaches, Mercedes has released a new teaser video showcasing the car’s wild active aerodynamics. The car features an active rear diffuser, where a panel that spans the width of the car and hooks upward at the edges extends outward from the rear bumper about six inches. We expect this device will help improve rear-end stability at high speeds, but we’ll have to wait for Mercedes-AMG to release more details to know for sure.
