The coach of Merab Dvalishvili, John Wood, thinks it would end even worse for Umar Nurmagomedov with a possible resit.
After he had conveniently defeated Sean O’Malley last year to claim the Bantam weight crown, Dvalishvili’s first defense against Nurmagomedov came during UFC 311 in January. Although he participated in the game on some sports books as a big 3-to-1 favorite, the Dagestani was short of score cards and suffered the first defeat in his career.
While Dvalishvili sails along Cory Sandhagen on UFC 320, rumors are popping up about a possible rematch between Nurmagomedov and ‘The Machine’. But if you ask Wood, that would only ramp it disastrous for the cousin of Khabib.
“I think he finishes Umar. I think he is destroying Umar,” Wood said Submission radio. “It is even worse for Umar. People try to apologize for whatever happened in Umar’s camp. That was the worst Merab you have ever seen. That was the most unhealthy, wounded Merab that you will ever see fighting in the short term: hand, back, rib, shining, shining, stafylokberbesmetta.”
“Everything you can experience, and he still went there and treated it just like that. And that is one where you don’t want the angry Merab to your ass – and he is not a big fan of some things they say, some things he does. I think that is going in a much more violent way, and I think that there will probably be an end to that fight.”
A follow-up scrap between Nurmagomedov and Dvalishvili is probably not on the wish list of an MMA fan. Nevertheless, the Bantam weight division has a large shortage of contenders, despite the fact that it is one of the most talented weight classes in the UFC, which is more than possible for a rematch.
But if Dvalishvili gets his wish, his next test may meet the former champion of 135 pound Petr Yan.
