Melvin Guillard recently called it a career in combat sports after scoring a win against an Irish bare-knuckle legend who fought Melvin Guillard twice and weighed in on that news. That fighter in question was Jimmy Sweeney, who reflected on his pair of no-glove fights with Guillard in 2017. Those clashes took place at BKB 6 and BKB 7 in championship contention, with Sweeney picking up two impressive victories over former UFC vet Melvin Guillard.
When discussing his thoughts on Guillard’s retirement after earning a win that snapped a lengthy losing skid, Sweeney said [via Bare Knuckle Bowker],
“Like 11 years or something. Like 11 years, 11 fights, something crazy, a crazy losing streak. But fair play to him, you know. Melvin was one of those guys, he’s very mouthy, you know what I mean? He talks a lot of trash and it’s documented. It’s on video that we had; we used to almost have a fight outside and a fight in a restaurant. With that show, we didn’t even fight with each other, you know.” That we weren’t even fighting each other.”
“Just; it just got crazy. Again, we weren’t arguing with each other. On the second occasion we had an altercation in a restaurant, it was just angry. There were all my people. There were a few guys from; obviously we’re professionals and with bare fists, you’re not going to fight like that. I think we actually talked later that night, and you know what? He was an absolute gentleman when you get to know him. A very, very nice guy. But after that I I I think I hit him twice in the head. But it is what it is.”
Melvin Guillard and Jimmy Sweeney’s path to building respect after hectic altercations
Sweeney addressed their previous friction from years ago and shared where the two stand with each other now [via Bare Knuckle Bowker],
“Yes. A lot of respect for what I got from him. I can only go on about how they are with me, and after the altercations we put everything aside and I became good friends with him. Even to this day I’ll still like and comment on his stuff, or he’ll comment on mine, stuff like that, you know what I mean?”
Sweeney described what it was like to go from the main battles to now having mutual respect after all was said and done. [via Bare Knuckle Bowker],
“Yeah, it was good. Like I said to him after the altercation, like there was quite a few of our guys there, and one of our guys said to him afterward, “Have you ever seen that movie Snatch?” And he goes, “Yeah, yeah.” He says, ‘Well, we’re the real travelers. We’re the real Snatch.” We just put you in a boot and he’s like, oh what, man? [laughs]. No, it’s all cool, man.’
