Lwarner Tien was “super happy” after making history at the Australian Open.
He played great, super aggressive. Even when I made good shots, he shot back better. I didn’t find many solutions on the pitch today, which is rare, and I haven’t felt like this many times in my life Daniil Medvedev
Ten, 20 last month, recorded a 6-4 6-0 6-3 victory over former world number 1 Daniil Medvedev.
The victory made him the youngest Happy Slam quarter-finalist since Nick Kyrgios in 2015.
And he faces third seed Alexander Zverev, last year’s defeated finalist, for a place in the last four.
Tien, the 25th seed, said: “It’s so special to come back here and play every year, and it was a big goal of mine (to do well at the tournament) and I’m super happy.
“Every year since I’ve been here, the support from the crowd has been amazing. I don’t know why, but every year it’s been so special to come back and have a crowd like that, with so much energy. It means a lot to me.”
Ten proved Andy Murray had a point when he repeated his victory over the Russian in Melbourne last year, although it lasted just 99 minutes, unlike the epic 4 hour 49 minute marathon of 12 months ago.
Andy Murray had sent a text message to British broadcaster TNT Sports asking them to pay more attention to the Californian left-hander during the tournament in Melbourne a few days earlier.
And NextGen champion Ten certainly underlined why he had provoked Britain’s greatest tennis player and TV viewer Murray to send it as he dismantled Medvedev.
The 20-year-old cruised through the first set with ease and completed an 11-match winning run as he bagged Medvedev in the second set before completing the victory as his opponent looked bewildered as he searched for answers.

Medvedev, 29, who had won all eight games in 2026, said: “He played great, super aggressive. Even when I made good shots, he returned a better shot. I didn’t find many solutions on the court today, which is rare, and I haven’t felt like this so many times in my life.”
“But then again, these things can happen. He had an incredible match where everything went into it. It’s happened to me a few times too, and you even feel a little sorry for your opponent because okay, I can go for tweener now and probably with my eyes closed and get it. It happens. I maybe should have done something better to try to disrupt this rhythm of his.”
“I think I need to concentrate more in general. If we look at the last eight tournaments, from the US Open onwards I played great. I beat a lot of players. I played great against some top players. Overall I went far in the results. Even here I won two very tough matches against opponents who played well. [Quentin] Halys and Fabian [Marozsan].
“So I have to try not to concentrate on this exact match, which wasn’t good, because he outmatched me, so that’s not a good feeling. But I have to concentrate more on the overall picture and just keep working like I did for the last tournaments.”
“If I manage to play well and beat all the players I’ve beaten in all these tournaments, I can get where I want. Of course it’s a shame to end a Grand Slam like this while I was feeling good and confident, but it is what it is.”

He is also an author and has written several Tottenham Hotspur-related books, the latest being Danny Blanchflower: A Glorious Life: The Authorized 100th Anniversary Biography of a Global Football Icon, which will be published on Pitch in March.
