Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Allrounder Meeen Ali recently announced that the franchise almost replaced Virat Kohli As Captain in 2019. Meeen claimed that Parthiv Patel was about to be appointed as RCB skipper during the coaching support of Gary Kirsten.

Kohli, one of the most celebrated RCB leaders, officially took over from Daniel Vettori in 2013 and held the role until 2021. Despite his impressive versions with the bat, RCB suffered a horrible run under his leadership, especially between 2017 and 2019 ended in two of those three seasons. The bad seasons came after the heartbreaking loss of RCB in the final of 2016. Ali, who was part of the RCB setup between 2018 and 2020, revealed that there were discussions about replacing Kohli were pretty serious. He said that Parthiv was strongly considered for the role.

“Yes, I think he was. I am pretty sure that he was. In the last year when Gary Kirsten was there the first year, I believe that party stood in line to become a captain. He had a brilliant cricket brain. That was the conversation at the time.

Despite internal discussions, the change in the captain never came to. Kohli retained the capincy and led the side to 2021, when he voluntarily resigned, stating the problems with the workload. Kohli led RCB to the play-offs in 2020 and continued to score at the top of the score cards. In 2021, Kohli announced his decision to give up Captain, and the South African veteran Faf du Plessis took over in the following seasons.

RCB eventually broke their title of drought in 2025 under the direction of Rajat Patidar. Kohli played a major role with the bat and scored 657 points in 15 games. In the meantime, Parthiv, who was at RCB until 2019, did not play in the IPL.
