LV Navaneeth, CEO of The Hindu Group, speaking at the summit
LV Navaneeth, CEO of The Hindu Group, emphasized that there is a need to find the right revenue models and fair revenue sharing between major technology platforms and media organizations. He spoke during a panel discussion at the AI Impact Summit on Monday.
AI in the newsroom
On the use of AI in newsrooms, he said: “I think the big differentiator when it comes to media is that trust is not generated by technology, it is produced by institutions and that’s where you draw the line. There are multiple ways to use AI
“One of the biggest use cases we’re using it effectively for is… when you make sense of what’s happening today, use yesterday’s context, and paint a picture of the implications of the choices we make as a society. So we’ve built a model that doesn’t hallucinate, because the sources of that model are our own archival material. As someone writes a story, it generates content from the past, provides context and relevance, and a journalist can choose to take that, summarize it, and add context, so that increases stickiness,” he added.
Meanwhile, during the panel discussion, Kalli Purie, Vice Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, India Today Group, said, “We don’t use AI to create stories. We call it the AI sandwich. It starts with a human, can use AI and ends with a human.” She stressed that it is crucial to ensure that journalistic content is given fair value, used in AI systems, and that there must be attribution and traceability. Purie also pointed out that it is important to place real value on verified content and severely punish AI hallucination.
Media responsibility
At the same time, Navaneeth pointed out that just as traditional media is responsible for the content they publish, platforms should also be held to the same high standards. He also said it is also important to raise awareness among consumers so that they demand accuracy measurement, attribution and AI labeling on content.
“It is important for the industry to find the right revenue models and fair distribution of revenues to ensure that journalism is a force for the greater good. My wish, as someone involved in the news business and privileged to work with an extremely respected organization, is to ensure that I am always in a position to prioritize long-term trust over short-term efficiency and productivity,” he added
