MD Horsemen harvest rewards of stakes and bonus programs

Maryland Horsemen have emerged as meaningful beneficiaries of the Collaborative Dual-State Stakes schedule and new bonus stimuli, according to statistics over the period from 21 June to 23 August this year.

Regional cooperation offers extensive opportunities

The Joint Maryland-Virginia Stakes Program was born from discussions about regional cooperation to maximize the racing opportunities. With the Maryland Jockey Club that decides to get dark during a large part of the colonial Downs meeting, the scheme in that stakes was usually hosted in Laurel Park in Virginia. The spirit of partnership ensured continuity for riders, trainers and breeders in both states.

Despite the fact that six of the first eight combined bets are disputed in colonial downs, dominated in Maryland -Foked or Realized Horses. There were 41 starters in Maryland compared to 10 from Virginia, and Maryland horses collected $ 692,250-a impressive 72.4%of the $ 956,000 available in total wallet.

Stakes Program -Expansion

The partnership effectively expanded the Maryland-Bred Stakes program. Traditionally appreciated at $ 1.05 million, it grew to no less than $ 1.8 million with the addition of $ 750,000 in wallet money from colonial downs. It is important that four of the stakes hosted by Virginia in July and August races were typically in Laurel Park events that would probably not have been held this year in view of the Maryland packing tax calendar.

The program will take place later this year, when 2-year-olds bred in Virginia are eligible to compete alongside Maryland-Breds in the Juvenile Fillies in Maryland and Maryland in Laurel Park. Both races received wallets from $ 100,000 to $ 125,000. In addition, eight in Maryland are limited in strikes from $ 75,000 to $ 100,000 each.

The four remaining combined States-de Jennings, Geisha, Conniver and Not for Love are planned for January and March.

The stronger foal crop of Maryland offers a lead

Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association President Katharine Voss noted that breeders in Maryland produce considerably more foals than Virginia, with about four times as many two and three -year -olds in training.

“This program stemmed from the first discussions to work on the coordination of schemes in the region,” said Voss. “With Laurel Park in July and August, we had some commitment, but no place to squeeze them. Colonial Downs was enthusiastic with merging races bred by Virginia with our races bred by Maryland.”

Bonus program strengthens the summer racing gap

The revised Stakes calendar was perfectly tailored to the new $ 600,000 Maryland-Foked owner and developer’s association, designed to support local horses racing in Colonial Downs and Delaware Park during the summer racing hiatus of Maryland. From July 4 to August 17, 2025, bonuses were divided on the basis of a point system bound by racing conditions.

A total of 198 Maryland-Foked horses earned Bonuses-132 in Delaware Park and 66 at Colonial Downs. Starters were distributed per category as follows:

• No price or claim $ 5k+ – 48 horses

• Claim $ 45k- $ 30k-29 horses

• Claim $ 25k- $ 16k-60 horses

• Claim $ 12.5k- $ 5k-61 horses

Starter races received points that are equivalent to two claim levels higher. Stakes, certified and races bred by the state were not eligible for bonuses.

The swimming pool was distributed according to the total points earned over all eligible races, with bonuses that are equally divided between owners and developers. This structure originated from the earlier bonus program of the owner (which paid 30% of the wallet income) and builds on the developer -bonus program launched in 2020.

A victory for Maryland Horsemen

With extensive interests -dependent wallets, increased limited racing values and the addition of a lucrative bonus program, Maryland Horsemen have realized substantial benefits of the cooperative approach with Virginia. The results of only the first half of the dual-state scheme underline the power of Maryland and emphasize the importance of continuous regional cooperation.
