Max Fried finally understands from Funk to look like the bait that Yankees needs

2 minutes, 33 seconds Read

This was the Max Fried from April, May and June.

The bait that would not give an inch to the opposition.

Who was at its best when it was necessary.

The misery of the Yankees may have passed against the rival Red Sox on Friday evening in the form of a gloomy 1-0 defeat in the Bronx, but you couldn’t blame Fried there. He kept them in the game when Brayan Bello set up zeros on Friday evening.

“I used both sides of the plate, used all my pitches and just started pitching again,” Fried said after the Yankees fell against the Red Sox this season. “I feel that I often just tried to try … the fastball too much. I wanted to throw a number of different fields in different points and be good when taking some gambling.”

The Southpaw allowed only four singles about six Shutout -innings while he hit seven.

He eliminated Fenoom Roman Anthony all three times. He stood opposite him. Every start was also runners on the base.

Fried threw seven different pitches against the Red Sox, and none of them more than 26 times.

He cut back on his use of the cut Fastball and threw it at just 14 times. That was because of design.

“I just wanted to be able to use both sides of the plate and change speeds – that’s what I really do well,” he said. “I often felt like I was being supported in a corner and maybe the cutter used a little too much. I just wanted to change something. It was good. It was good. It was nice to keep the team in the game.”

The only negative thing about Fried’s outing was that his pitch count was so high – 99 after six innings – he could not go deeper into the game.

That was usually the result of three walks.

But that is nitpicking for a pitcher who had struggled so much lately.

In three previous Augustarts, Fried had allowed 15 points earned over 15 innings, an ERA from 9 a.m. He was not much better in July and threw an ERA of 5.54.

Perhaps this is a start for Fried when September is approaching.

The Yankees need this version of him.

“I felt that everything was a factor for him tonight, which was good to see,” said Aaron Boone manager. “His entire arsenal played a role for him. He was really out of the barrel all night.”
