Dallas Mavericks fans still haven’t gotten over management’s decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season, and that observation was made clear during the final minute of Friday night’s 117-107 home loss to the Washington Wizards.
Mavericks fans are calling for GM Nico Harrison’s job
Mavs fans continue to call for the firing of general manager Nico Harrison.
“Fire Nico!” Chants can still be heard at the American Airlines Center since the Doncic trade on Feb. 2, months after the homegrown superstar led Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals.
Although the Mavericks won the draft lottery and selected Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick over the summer, the club continued to struggle with the former Duke star and Anthony Davis.
After being defeated by the San Antonio Spurs at home by 33 in Wednesday’s opener, Dallas lost by double digits to a Washington team after an 18-64 season.
Cooper Flagg on the “Fire Nico” chants at the end of tonight’s game:
“I’m just locked into the game, like I said, I haven’t even heard that one. I listen to the coach, listen to the guys on the team, the vets… I’m trying to tune all those things out.” pic.twitter.com/UeNHQo1pt8

‘I think they have the right to vent, but there is patience [needed]Mavs coach Jason Kidd said. “It’s a different team, it’s a new team. We’re just starting to understand each other. We continue to learn from each other. So I would say be patient, but I understand the frustration.
“We all want to win. We all want to compete at a high level, but it’s a game of expression and fans have the right to express themselves. But that won’t stop us from coming to work tomorrow and getting better and getting ready for [the next game].”
No contract extension talks between Mavs and Harrison
According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahonKidd signed a multi-year contract extension during the preseason, shortly after the Mavs denied the New York Knicks permission to pursue him for their offseason head coaching vacancy.
Sources close to the team told MacMahon that “there has not been any discussion about a contract extension for Harrison, who has two years left on his contract,” he reported.
Flagg scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and finished his performance with five rebounds, six assists and five turnovers. He finished 6-for-14 (42.9%) shooting from the field and 2-for-5 (40%) from deep.
“The fans showed up. They were great tonight. I thought we competed at a high level in that fourth quarter. A lot of things were right: making stops, playing the way we want to play, and that about sums it up,” Flagg said.
“It was just periods tonight and we have to be able to keep that up for the entire game. I think we have taken a small step in the right direction, but we have to do a lot better.”
Anthony Davis isn’t worried about an 0-2 start
Meanwhile, Davis scored 27 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. The five-time All-NBA member shot 9-for-19 (47.4%) from the floor and 9-for-12 (75%) at the foul line.
However, he also missed all four of his three-point attempts.
When asked about his concerns after the 0-2 start, Davis said, “None.” He reportedly answered a question about how the Mavs and Flagg would handle adversity, MacMahon said.
“This is adversity? What is adversity?” Davis said. “We still have 80 games. You can go away with ten in a row.” [wins] and then what? This is how I look at it and I’m sure he looks at it that way too, and we’ve talked about that. We know we have to be better on both ends, but the NBA season is a roller coaster, so we’re staying positive.”
The Mavericks continue their six-game homestand against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.
