The Dallas Mavericks are assessing Anthony Davis’ role before making any decisions on a contract extension or potential trade, NBA insider Michael Scotto said on YES Network Sunday, December 14.

Scotto reported that the Mavericks want to see Davis on the court with rookie Cooper Flagg, and possibly a returning Kyrie Irving, to evaluate how the trio could shape the team’s core long-term.

Davis, acquired in the blockbuster Luka Doncic trade, has struggled with injuries this season. He played eleven games and averaged 20 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 29.5 minutes per game.

Scotto noted that the Mavericks are in an “evaluation period,” emphasizing that Davis must prove his value in court to strengthen his case for an extension or increase appeal on the trade market.

Dallas has dealt with a significant injury burden this season, including the absence of center Dereck Lively II for the remainder of the season. Scotto emphasized that health is a central factor in planning the team’s future.

League insiders report that potential suitors, including Detroit, Atlanta and Toronto, remain cautious due to Davis’ injury history and the large contract, which runs through 2026-2027, with a $62.7 million player option for 2027-2028.

ESPN’s Tim Bontemps quoted executives questioning the value of Davis’ contract, noting that “it’s hard for a guy like Anthony Davis to justify being capped at 35 percent if they don’t play a lot of minutes and games.”

Davis’ versatility as a rim protector, pick-and-roll finisher and high-post facilitator makes him an attractive asset, but acquisition teams would have to match the salary and likely offer draft compensation.

Scotto emphasized that Dallas views the combination of Davis and Flagg as crucial, with Kyrie Irving expected to resume primary ball-handling duties upon return. This configuration represents the Mavericks’ ideal vision of a combination star guard, wing and big man.

While the trade market exists, sources indicate the Mavericks are prioritizing internal evaluation over immediately moving Davis, leaving his future dependent on performance, health and team fitness.

The Mavericks currently have a 10-16 record, reflecting the impact of injuries and roster adjustments as management continues to weigh whether Davis’ presence improves the team’s long-term competitiveness.
