The Hyrox World Championships 2025 took place in Chicago, IL, and the Windy City Zoemde with all the fitness race campaign that took place. Athletes from all over the world gathered to celebrate and compete fitness for individual records and possible championships.
Matt Choi was in the middle of all the action, competed in both Singles and Doubles promotion and did his own reporting of the event for his followers and subscribers. Even as busy as he was, Choi thought time to enjoy the moment and to be present while pushing himself to chase new PRs. He thought the way the event was run also helped.
“It was special,” he said. Choi compared the feeling of being Hyrox with the most important marathon events in the world. The energy is contagious and he couldn’t help it, but embrace it.
“I think Hyrox has done a very good job in organizing a top class event.”
Choi’s for some time was 1:05:57, which was impressive, given that he did not experience in this sport while he walks. Unfortunately for him there was a problem with the turf that struck some of the competitors, including he,. Nevertheless, Choi kept in mind that he can only control what he can control and not to have negativity taken over.
“I think if you look at the things that are outside of your control, it doesn’t allow you to dictate those things how you talk to yourself and how you treat yourself right now.”
The big collection meal for him was his double time of 54:25 with partner Mason Stevens. Stevens was not his planned partner, but his original teammate could not compete. Given that he and Stevens had never participated before and they had participated during the singles events, and they finished in the Top 40 at the World Championships, he was proud of the effort and the result.
“I felt that I and Mason really did well, even though we were not partners,” he shared. “I felt it was a very pleasant experience.”
Then there was the media aspect of his work. While most athletes either rested or mentally prepared, Choi grinded in a different role. Nevertheless, he made the most out of his opportunity to contribute and promote the sport. His experience with making content served him well while he juggled with the roles of athlete and reporter.
“I still want to make sure that I show up as a athlete. If I do those things, I think it is easier for me to appear on the media side, because I think it is just that in that sense it is pretty natural to me.”
What awaits us for Matt Choi
Successful people don’t waste much time to look back, because there is usually something in front and Choi is no different. With the Hylox world championships in the rear -view mirror, he is now focused on running and preparing for multiple races, including the Marine Corps Marathon for the Kyle Peace Foundation and the 2025 Berlin marathon. He has driven marathon-length sessions himself, but racing is another animal, and although he has participated in races in the past, he is looking forward to the challenge of setting a PR.
“Running is only for completion. You only cover the distance of 26.2 miles,” he explained. For these races, he has the chance to devote a full training block to improving his time, and that fascinates him.
“I think that is something that is really in my heart. My goal is to break under 2:50.”

How Matt Choi prepares for event races
The Berlin marathon is set on Sunday, September 21, for three months after his Hyrox events. That is enough time to prepare, but there is more to race in a case of that size than just running and running more. It will be a different season in a different climate, and there is a time difference of seven hours between Berlin and where he trains in Texas.
Running in the heat of summer will be different from racing in the fall, but Choi explained why that is actually a good thing for him. It gives him the chance to make the training more difficult, so that the race will complete it more easily.
Choi explained, “gradually overloading, such as in a gym condition, in running is comparable. You increase volume and intensity and the pace increases. I think that a piece of training is based on week to week.”
He continued: “If I am able to hold my steps that I need in the heat, it should only build my confidence that goes into a colder climate.”
The thought of devoting a period to prepare for a race, he fascinates, but he will not close his role as a content maker. He plans to take his followers and subscribers on the ride with him by sharing his training in the run -up to the race.
“I’m going to be pretty open in terms of showing the training and the behind the scenes because I have a Youtube series about breaking 2:50.”
The weekly episodes offer a unique perspective on how Choi trains and prepares for the big race in Berlin. This is a new creative direction for Choi, but it is one that he thinks can enjoy fans and followers. The goal for Choi is not only to entertain and inspire them, but he also wants to conclude it with a new PB.
“I am enthusiastic about it. I am enthusiastic about this challenge.”
