Manchester United were expected to struggle against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday given their recent record against the Red Devils.
Despite questionable refereeing, United were beaten 4-2 at Old Trafford, with Matheus Cunha opening his account for the club, while Casemiro got one and Bryan Mbeumo grabbed a brace.
Despite his impressive form, questions had been raised about the ex-Wolves striker due to his lack of goals and assists so far.
And as the 26-year-old revealed after the match, it weighed heavily on his mind. But the wonder strike against the Seagulls will go a long way in helping him rebuild his confidence going forward.
Matheus Cunha finally breaks his duck
His teammates were quick to joke as soon as he found the back of the net, with the attacking midfielder delighted that he could contribute to a famous victory.
“Yes, finally!”, the Brazilian international said in comments club website. “Wow. I worked so hard for this. The win for starters, to get in and I’m so happy.”
“But of course I want to contribute a little more and then today comes, [but] we win and then everything is fine.”
Asked whether the goal drought was affecting him, the versatile forward said: “Of course. We don’t have many actions, but when you play up front you have to score goals.”
“I need to contribute more. But the last time I said this, if my participation is to help the team and we are going to do well, I will be happy too.
“But with this goal, of course, everyone will be around me pushing me. The boys started joking and then said, ‘Wow, you can score!’. These things happen and everyone is pushing me and I’m so happy to be here.”
Three wins in a row under Ruben Amorim for the first time have seen the team rise to fourth in the Premier League.
Who would have thought that possible, given the initial problems and the frenzied media process calling for the Portuguese tactician’s dismissal.

But as Matheus Cunha explained, the team remains fully behind their head coach, and they are happy for him, as Amorim often becomes overstressed when results are not to the team’s liking.
“Everyone has full confidence in Ruben Amorim. He is someone who pushes us forward. He is always very stressed until we start winning, and then he improves every day. Of course he deserves this, Man United deserves this.”
“This must be the most normal thing in the world for this club. I’m so happy to be part of this. Great day, I will remember this.”
Now is the time for United’s number 10 to keep his scoring streak going and for the 20-time English league champions to climb the ranks.
