Manchester United ensured that they go into the international break in better spirits by sweeping Sunderland aside in Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The men of Ruben Amorim struck twice in the first half before they held up with relatively comfort to secure their third victory over the bouncer for home support.
Mason Mount opened the score after lifting some eyebrows with his presence in the starting line-up instead of the summer signing Matheus Cunha, who started on the couch.
Cunha’s electric start of his career in Manchester got somewhat stuck after an injury had declared him from a handful of competitions and struggled to make an impact on his return to the defeat against Brentford.
Cunha responds to weekend events
Mount was excellent all Saturday, but was replaced by Cunha five minutes after the hour to run the Brazilian in the later stages.
With the game already won, there was no real need for the 26-year-old to do much more than to help his teammates about the line and to secure the much needed points that United leave in the upper half of the table in the break.
Cunha will undoubtedly have been disappointed not to start, but, as reported by The explicitHad a positive message for the fans he shared after the game on social media.
“Nothing to say about how beautiful it is to win like this, at home and with the fans on our side,” he placed on Fire Emoji next to a heart.
Cunha’s post will be well received by United supporters, who are desperate to the team to show the Vechtgeest needed to get some more points on the board in the Premier League after another rocky start of the season.
What for Cunha now
Despite Cunha’s public show of positivity, he will be sharply aware of the form that Mount has shown this season. The former Chelsea -Man has certainly used his claim to start the Crunch match in Anfield after the international break.
With Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko also Shoo-In’s to start in the coming weeks, Cunha knows that he is the mountain that he should loosen to get a run in the starting XI.
Given the injury record of Mount and the inability to complete week on week 90 minutes, the former Wolves-Man will undoubtedly get opportunities to impress.
It will then be up to Cunha to take his chances, but Amorim will be delighted to have such quality options in forward areas to struggle this period so badly for the goal after last season.
