Manchester United did well to keep a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday evening.
After a disastrous 3-0 defeat against Manchester City last weekend, Man United wanted to bounce back against another formidable opponent, this time for the old Trafford-Mermany.
First half
With the rain that dropped, United came a clear start and pressed in the last third part of Chelsea.
Patrick Dorgu hit a surgical cross to Bryan Mbeumo, whose well -hit header was saved by Robert Sanchez.
Drama struck in the fourth minute, when Mbeumo arrived at the end of a long ball from Altay Bayindir and beat the last defender. With only the goalkeeper who stands between him and the goal posts, Sanchez Mbeumo brutally in the knee, giving him a straight red card in the trial.
There was no fight from the Chelsea Shot stopper, who knew there was no excuse for his dangerous challenge.
United received a free kick on the edge of the box, a clear chance of goal. Bruno Fernandes hit his free kick against the wall, with Mbeumo’s Follow-up did not do better. Hoek to United.
While the Harry Maguire corner found, Backup goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen did well to erase the danger. After another angle, Amad Diallo received the loose ball on the edge of the box and he insisted a shot that was blocked by a rigid defense. United seemed determined to take advantage of their numerical benefits.
United suddenly got their breakthrough. Mbeumo crossed the ball to Dorgu, whose header Fernandes found, who burst the box to bury the ball in the back of the net. Then VAR intervened, with the United Skipper closing closely with the final defender.
After a long wait, Old Trafford broke out when the referee granted the goal. The perseverance of United has paid off.
Shortly after the restart, United seemed determined to double their lead with a quick counterattack. Mbeumo took a speculative shot from outside the box that he just bowed over the bar.
Chelsea’s first decent attempt came from a corner, when Moises Caicedo received the ball on the edge of the box and hit, only for Matthijs de Ligt to skillfully block his shot.
United seemed to have scored again when Amad crossed the ball to Casemiro, who led the ball in the net. Unfortunately, Amad had taken the ball out of the game.
Then, in the 36th minute, Casemiro’s hard work paid off. After a free kick that led to a goalmouth-Klauteren, Luke Shaw led the ball to Casemiro, who insisted the ball from close by. 2-0 to United, with just a few minutes to go until halftime.
Marc Cucurella brought Noussair Mazraoui down with a rough challenge to earn a yellow card. While he spent some time on the ground, Mazraoui was eventually able to recover and continue with the competition.
Nine minutes stop time were added after a drama-filled 45 minutes.
Four minutes after extra time it was united who went down a man. Casemiro was assessed to have polluted Andrey Santos and received his second yellow card of the competition and therefore his marching orders.
Suddenly it was ten versus ten, which means that United had to be so much more alert to keep their lead of two goals.
While United held up to the half-time whistle, they certainly had to reorganize during the break to stay ahead of their opponents, who suddenly smelled blood. Manager Ruben Amorim clearly had a number of critical tactical changes to make in the break.
Second half
Making a number of tactical phone calls was exactly what Amorim did.
Amorim was clearly looking for the leadership of his team and left Benjamin Sesko for midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
Just beyond the hourly mark, De Ligt was forced to give a critical permission after a deadly ball in the box from Chelsea.
Then, from the corner, it seemed that Fofana withdrew a goal for Chelsea with a suitable header. While he was ruled out ofside, it was worrying to see that Bayindir remained static, allowing him to take control of his box from what the first corner of the visitors was.
With just over 20 minutes to go, Amorim made a double switch. Mason Mount and Leny Yoro emerged to replace Mbeumo and Maguire.
Mazraoui was removed for Matheus Cunha, who marked his return of a short injury.
With little more than 10 minutes to play, all the pressure on United was. Trevor Chalobah came at the end of a cross of a corner to go in a goal for Chelsea.
Again, it was a corner that turned out to be united. What is worse is that it was the first shot of the visitors to the entire game. Nevertheless, United had to do their best to keep Chelsea off for the rest of the game to get away with a valuable victory.
For 82 minutes, Fernandes tried to extend the lead of United with a strong long -distance effort, so that the keeper cherished the ball around the post for a corner.
While Chelsea launched a fast counter of their own box, Luke Shaw made an impressive sliding tackle to win the ball back for United.
Kobbie Mainoo Fernandes replaced in the 87th minute.
Despite the fact that Chelsea dominated the property in the second half, United had clearly not given up to chase a third goal.
Seven minutes of stopping were awarded, which means that United still had a huge task ahead of them because they tried to keep their lead until the last whistle.
Chelsea started pushing hard for an equalizer in the last minutes of the stop time and earned a corner. Fortunately Bayindir was able to hit the threatening cross.
