Manchester United are set to make a controversial signing to take Ruben Amorim’s project to the next level.

The Red Devils’ convincing 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield should earn Amorim plenty of credit, despite question marks over his future at Old Trafford.

Despite United’s disappointing start to the new campaign, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team have remained steadfast in their position that Amorim will be given considerable time to implement his ideas.

Ineos have also backed Amorim heavily in the transfer market, spending almost £250m on new signings. Now a report in Spain suggests that the club’s hierarchy are considering handing their head coach a big striker whose arrival would certainly divide opinion among supporters.

Manchester United is prepared to take an ambitious step

According to TransfersUnited are willing to spend around €100 million on Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood graduated from the club’s famed academy in 2018 and immediately established himself as one of the side’s key players. He impressed many with his ball striking and two-footedness.

However, United parted ways with the Englishman in 2024 due to off-field allegations. Olympique de Marseille agreed to sign Greenwood in a deal worth up to £26 million.

The Premier League giants included a 50 percent sell-on clause in his move to the south of France, and his next transfer could earn them a significant sum.

However, the Spanish outlet claims United are unhappy with that arrangement. Instead, they now want to “rectify the situation” and sign their former talent. Marseille plan to keep their talisman, but a €100 million bid could change the equation.

Greenwood’s goals are unlikely to change the mood in Manchester

The 24-year-old has made waves in France, finishing last season as joint top scorer alongside Ousmane Dembélé with 21 goals.

This season he has looked even more clinical in the final third, having been directly involved in eleven goals in ten games in all competitions.

This weekend, Greenwood scored four goals in Marseille’s 6-2 win over Le Havre, helping Roberto De Zerbi’s men lift PSG to the top of Ligue 1.

That said, United are blessed with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo on the right flank. As such, another €100 million purchase on the right would make little sense, either tactically or financially.

More importantly, it is highly unlikely that those at United will risk public and private backlash by making a move for Greenwood, given the circumstances that forced them to push him away in the first place. It is therefore advisable to take the claim with a grain of salt.
