The five suspects, who reached the jewelry store on two motorcycles around 2 p.m., entered the jewelry store in the city with a firearm and threatened the seven to eight employees present in the store.
According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) Boralingaiah, who visited the spot, the bandits threatened the workers and stuffed the gold jewelery into a bag before fleeing.
The exact amount of gold jewelry that was looted is yet to be verified. However, he said the looters took “a few kilos” of gold jewelry.
A CCTV camera installed on the premises of the jewelry store captured footage of the robbery. Police officers verify the images.
The jewelry store manager, who was away for lunch when the bandits struck, returned while the suspects were out. Eyewitnesses said the bandits fired one bullet in the air before fleeing from the spot.
Police officials are also in contact with employees, who were threatened by the bandits, to gather as much information as possible about the suspects.
The jewelery store, which opened in April this year, has four partners and also has branches in Virajpet and Kannur in Kerala.
The jewelry store is housed in a newly built business complex with few tenants. Police are also verifying whether the store management has posted sufficient private security, but say their immediate goal is to track down the suspects and recover the looted gold.
Mysuru District Police Superintendent N. Vishnuvardhan also visited the spot.
