Martin Necas’ epic quote: ‘We let them win the first one’ ahead of Canada’s rematch

Martin Necas delivered a classic piece of post-match trash talk with a smile following Team Czech Republic’s victory over Denmark at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

After Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Czech Republic, which secured their ticket to the quarter-finals and set up a much-anticipated rematch against Canada, the Colorado Avalanche forward was asked how he would stack up against the favorites Team Canada, who had dominated them in the opening round of the preliminary round.

Necas joked that the earlier loss was intentional.

“We let them win the first one because we knew we weren’t going to win two in a row against Canada,” he said. It was clearly a joke: the media around him got a good laugh from the reactions.

Teammate Tomas Hertl continued with similar humor: “Exactly, that was our plan, because we say we probably can’t beat Canada twice in the same tournament, so we give them the first win. So now it’s our turn.”

The comments went viral as a lighthearted joke, even though some uninformed fans saw the message as a call from Necas. He didn’t even try to play mind games.

The chance that the Czech Republic will win is not great. They were eliminated in the group stage by Canada, where Canada defeated them 36–26. Personally, Necas was on fire at the Olympics, posting multiple points in three straight games. He had a goal and an assist against Denmark to lead the team through the tournament with seven points (3G, 4A).

Now the Czechs get their chance for revenge in a quarterfinal elimination match against the top-seeded Canadians on Wednesday (10:40 a.m. ET / 8:40 a.m. MT, airing on Peacock, CBC, etc.). Necas acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting that Canada is “going to get hot” and emphasizing the need to avoid “stupid mistakes.”

If anything, his comments set up what could be one of the most compelling matches of the tournament: a rematch where the underdogs talk big, and the favorites try to stay red-hot and remain the favorites to win gold.
