Marshall’s new Heddon hub adds multi-room audio to Auracast-enabled speakers

Marshall plans to add seamless multi-room audio to its Bluetooth speakers via a newly announced music streaming hub called Heddon. The $300 hub allows multiple older Marshall speakers to be connected and synced together, similar to Sonos’ audio devices.

Instead of using Wi-Fi to have multiple speakers play the same audio, the Marshall Heddon uses Auracast. The hub connects to services like Spotify Connect or Tidal via Wi-Fi, or other devices via Google Cast and AirPlay, then shares that audio via Auracast with the Marshall Acton III, Stanmore III and Wobrun III speakers. You can control playback via a connected Marshall app, and the Heddon also has RCA ports for connecting other speakers or a turntable to the system.

Because the Heddon requires a Wi-Fi connection, Marshall says it could add features to the system over time, but even in the short term the hub should significantly extend the life of the company’s speakers. Instead of switching to newer models with built-in Wi-Fi, just grab a Heddon. Sonos offers similar functionality through its Sonos Port and Sonos Amp accessories and third-party hubs from companies such as WiiM can add more options. The Marshall Heddon is more streamlined in comparison, but if you’ve already invested in the company’s speakers, or plan to build out your audio system with them, the hub can be a useful tool.

The Marshall Heddon is on sale now for $300. Marshall says customers who buy an Acton III, Stanmore III or Woburn III can get a Heddon for half price, and the hub will be included for free if you buy two or more qualifying Marshall home speakers.
