Marcus Semien received the second Gold Glove Award

Marcus Semien has earned his second career Gold Glove Award, becoming the first second baseman in Rangers and Senators franchise history to receive the honor.

Semien was announced as a finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove in his position, joining teammates Jacob deGrom, Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford and Adolis García. Semien, however, was the only player from the group to take home the prize, as was announced on Sunday evening for both competitions.

Despite a challenging year marked by injuries, missteps and a somewhat lackluster offensive performance from the Rangers, the team’s defense remained a highlight. The Rangers set a franchise record with a team fielding percentage of .99112, breaking the MLB record previously held by the 2013 Orioles (.99104). Additionally, they led Major League Baseball in defensive runs saved (DRS) with 89.

Known for his defensive skills, Semien really shined this season, surpassing the top 90th percentile of all qualified defensemen. He led the American League with a .996 fielding percentage. While some may consider this a down year for Semien, his five runs saved and seven outs are above average, but numbers slightly below his previous seasons, he still led in both categories. His consistency was the key to securing his Golden Glove.

Since moving to second base in Toronto to accommodate rising talent Bo Bichette, Semien has become a defensive mainstay. He earned two Gold Gloves at this position and his commitment, dedication and hard work have paid off. Over the past four seasons with the Rangers, Semien has developed into one of the most reliable defenders in the league.
