Marc Guehi insists that his focus on Crystal Palace will remain firm after the collapse of his proposed transfer to Liverpool on Deadline Day.
It was late on Deadline Day when Marc Guehi heard that the move on which he had prepared was eliminated.
For several tense hours, the Crystal Palace captain was about to join Liverpool in a £ 35 million deal.
The Premier League champions had identified the English international as a priority defensive signing and the negotiations between the two clubs were accelerated in the last days of the transfer star. In the afternoon of Deadline Day, there was in principle an agreement.
Guehi completed part of a medical and personal conditions for a five -year contract that was arranged until 2030. Liverpool believed they had their husbands. “I don’t have much to say, to be honest,” said Guehi. “I am focused on football and play for this club. But to the fans (I want to say) thank you very much for your support. I certainly feel it.”
Those few sentences, supplied for Palace’s UEFA Conference League Group Stage opener against Dynamo Kyiv, summarize his answer: modest, well -founded and fully professional.
Those qualities have defined his time in Selhurst Park since he had arrived from Chelsea in 2021, and they have been seen again during a period that both players and club could easily have taken care of.
The interest of Liverpool in Guehi has long been. With Joel Matip disappeared and Ibrahima Konaté who struggled to produce consistent versions, they identified him as a defender who could not only improve their starting XI, but also fitted in the club’s long -term vision. Young, Homegrown and already a leader at Premier League level, Guehi tapped every box.
Negotiations accelerated in the last days of the window and on the Deadline Day, Guehi was preparing to make the move.
In the end, the club made the difficult decision to hold their captain.
Guehi’s contract is going next summer and to date there has been no breakthrough in conversations about an extension. Palace is well aware that they can lose him for a reduced compensation or possibly as a free agent, but for now they have given priority to stability over financial profit in the short term.

“If you have tasted success, you are certainly not satisfied and you want more. Everyone at the club strives for more. We have seen what we can do. If we keep our heads low, we can hopefully get many more opportunities.”
Before Palace’s weekend profit was on Liverpool, Oliver Glasner made it clear that he expected his captain to “treat the situation in the right way”. Guehi did exactly that.
Faced with the media in addition to his manager prior to the Dynamo Kyiv game, he was inevitably asked again about the events of Deadline Day. His reaction was philosophical.
“The sun goes up, the sun goes down, life goes on,” he told TNT Sports.
“Fortunately for me I am in a football club that helped me and given me so much, so it makes it so much easier.”
Liverpool publicly indicated after the transfer window was concluded that they did not intend to visit the deal again in January. But that attitude could shift. The ACL injury of Giovanni Leoni has delivered the side of Arne Slot lighter than expected in the central defense, and Guehi remains admired a player in Anfield.

The result is expanding the unbeaten run of Palace and maintains the momentum of a season that really starts to feel transforming. Guehi remains in the center of everything, all captain, defensive anchor and for the time being dedicated to the club that refused to sell him.
